CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Utah volleyball team dropped its Pac-12 Conference match with Oregon State on Friday evening, falling in five sets (26-24, 21-25, 25-18, 13-25, 12-15) to the Beavers at Gill Coliseum.
The Utes (7-7, 1-2 Pac-12) scored 10 unanswered points and went up 2-1 in the match after downing the Beavers (3-10, 1-2 Pac-12) 25-18 in the third set, but the home team closed the match with a 25-13 fourth-set-win and a 15-12 win in the decisive fifth set.
Sophomore Adora Anae recorded 19 kills for the Utes on Friday, but it wasn't enough as OSU's Mary-Kate Marshall tallied a match-high 30 kills on 79 swings (.266) to help lead her squad to the five-set conference victory.
OSU led by as many as five points midway through the first set, but Utah managed to come back and pull within a point, down 17-16 following a 4-0 run. The Beavers countered with a 3-0 run and the Utes were forced to call a timeout. Out of the break, the Utes scored the next point and then went on to close the frame with a 10-4 run and take set one, 26-24.
The Utes would find themselves down by five points again, late in the second set and despite a 4-1 run the Utes were unable to complete the comeback in the frame and fell 25-21 to the Beavers. After falling behind 13-9, Utah called a timeout and the proceeded to outscore the Beavers 16-5 and take the third set, 25-18. A 6-2 run tied the set 15-15, but OSU came back with three straight points to go back up 18-15. Following a side-out, Utah tallied 10 unanswered points, which included three service aces from Megan Shughrou, and the Utes rallied to win the set 25-18 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Utah scored the first two points of the fourth set, but a 9-2 run from the Beavers put the home team on top 9-4 and Utah called its first timeout of the frame. The Utes snapped the streak out of the break, but was then unable to string together more than one point at a time and OSU went on to take the set, 25-13, and tie the match 2-2.
The Utes jumped out to an 8-4 lead prior the both teams switching sides, but the Beavers later countered with eight unanswered points to take a commanding 13-9 lead. Utah managed to get back-to-back points after going down match-point, but a service error from the Utes gave OSU the set win, 15-12, and the match.
