EUGENE, Ore. - The Utah volleyball team forced the No. 22-ranked Oregon Ducks to five sets Saturday evening, but the home team came away with the win, downing the Utes 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 25-19, 11-15) at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Utes dropped to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in Pac-12 play with the loss, while Oregon improved to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Utah opened the first set with a 4-1 run, but the Ducks would later come back to tie the frame 8-8 following a 5-1 run from the home team. Utah later led 21-16, forcing Oregon to take a timeout and the Ducks came out of the break with a 6-1 run to notch things up at 22-all. Utah called a timeout and then proceeded to win three of the next four points to take the set 25-23.
Utah led 14-11 midway through the second set, but the Ducks countered with a 4-0 run and took back the lead 15-14. Oregon would later go up 21-19 before a 3-0 run from the Utes gave Utah back the lead 22-21. The Ducks called a timeout to stop the run and later closed the set with four unanswered points to win, 25-22, and head into the intermission break tied 1-1 with the Utes.
The Utes and Ducks traded points to open the third set, but after Utah tied the set 6-6 on a kill from sophomore Eliza Katoa, the Ducks scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 16-7 lead. Utah managed to climb back into the set with a 4-0 run, which made it 19-14 in favor of the Ducks, but the home team did not allow Utah to go on another run and took the set 25-20 to go up 2-1 in the match.
Utah went on an 8-1 run early in the fourth set to go up 10-5, but Oregon countered with a 5-1 run to pull within a point of the Utes, 11-10. Oregon would later take a 13-12 lead, but the Utes managed to come back and take a 20-16 lead, which forced Oregon to call its final timeout of the frame. Utah then closed out the set, winning five of the final eight points to take the set, 25-19 and push the match into a fifth set for the second straight night.
The Utes and Ducks would trade point-for-point to open the fifth set until Oregon's 3-0 run gave the home team a 10-7 lead. Utah countered with a point to pull within two, but a 4-1 run gave the Ducks match-point, up 14-9. Utah got back-to-back points with a kill from sophomore Adroa Anae and a Ducks' attack error, but Oregon's Martenne Bettendorf notched her 25th kill of the night on the next point to give the Ducks the win, 15-11.
