Three Utah players advance in singles along with doubles team
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Utah Women's Tennis wrapped day two of play at the ITA Mountain Regionals on Thursday with one player advancing to the round of 16 in the main draw, a pair moving on in the main doubles draw and two individuals going forward in the consolation draw. -
In singles action, No. 8 seed Margo Pletcher defeated UTEP's Raven Bennett, 6-2, 6-3 and then topped Maria Tavares of Idaho, 6-2, 6-3 to move into the Round of 16. No. 14 seed Brianna Turley and No. 26 seed Jena Cheng won their second-round matches but were defeated in the following stage.Â
Turley defeated Colorado's Anabelle Andrinopoulos, 6-3, 6-4 before losing to Denver's Arisha Ladhani in a difficult three-setter, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Cheng was victorious against Colorado's Kyra Wojcik, 6-3, 6-4 but could not overcome UTEP's Vivian Kulicke, the tournament's No. 5 seed, 6-1, 6-3.
Utah's Taylor Calton, the No. 17 seed, lost to BYU's Savannah Ware, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and fellow Ute, Lexi Petrovic was beaten by the No. 12 seed, also from BYU, Mayci Jones.
Over in the consolation bracket, Luisa Gerstner da Rosa moved on with a win over Nevada's Adriana Gergelyova, 6-4, 6-0 and Victoria Robertson topped Air Force's Lily Forlini
In doubles action, the No. 1 seeded pair of Turley and Pletcher were knocked off by Denver's Maureen Slattery and Gracia Mboko, 8-1. However, the No. 11 seeded team of Cheng and Calton beat Ladhani and Sonja Radosevic, 8-2, to move to the Round of 16.
Both doubles and singles play continue tomorrow morning at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium. ITA Mountain Regional competition will continue until October 16th.Â
