TEMPE, Ariz. - Utah Softball was able to make quick work of its two opponents on Saturday night at the Kajikawa Classic. The Utes topped Georgia State 9-0 in five innings before needing the same amount of time to dismiss Portland State, 8-0.
Utah 9, Georgia State 0 (5 innings)
In the first game of the nightcap, the 1-3 hitters in the Utah lineup went 7-for-10, scoring four runs and driving in seven. Hannah Flippen had three hits, two runs scored and drove in three. The junior ended the game with a walk-off two-run laser over the left-field fence for Utah's first home run of the season.
Miranda Viramontes earned the win with three shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Hailey Hilburn came on in relief and threw two perfect innings, striking out three.
A pair of singles by Delilah Pacheco and Flippen started the contest before Anissa Urtez delivered a two-run single for an early lead. In the second inning, Flippen smacked a hard double to straightaway center that scored Shelby Pacheco, who had reached via error on a sacrifice attempt.
Leading 3-0, Utah doubled its lead in the third. Back-to-back doubles from Bridget Castro and Kristen Stewart tacked on another run. Ally Dickman recorded her first collegiate RBI with Utah's third two-bagger of the inning, a stinging shot to the left-center gap. Delilah Pacheco followed with a knock up the middle to plate the Ute freshman for a 6-0 advantage.
In the fifth, Hilburn batted for herself and laced a double down the left-field line. With two outs, the Utes turned the lineup over and Pacheco smacked another run-scoring single. Flippen followed with a lined shot over the left-field fence to seal the victory.
Utah 8, Portland State 0 (5 innings)
Anissa Urtez was the offensive hero in the second game of the evening, reaching base all four times, scoring twice and knocking in three as the Utes cruised to another win.
Hailey Hilburn, who pitched in relief during the first game, earned the start and allowed just two hits while striking out four in four innings. Kayce Nieto entered out of the pen and K'd two of the three baters she faced in the fifth frame.
Utah was active again in the first as Delilah Pacheco started off with a walk and moved up on a Hannah Flippen sacrifice. Urtez hit a grounder to second, but the throw to first was low and skipped away allowing Pacheco to score the game's first run.
Pacheco singled to start the third before Flippen bunted her over again. Urtez hit a grounder to third and this time, the throw was high, allowing the Utes to get two in scoring position. With one out, Bridget Castro walked and Kristen Stewart also earned a free pass to plate a run. Bella Secaira followed with a two-run single, her first runs batted in of the season, for a 4-0 lead.
Ally Dickman doubled to begin the fourth and moved to third on a wild pitch. Flippen wpuld then walk and steal second, putting two in scoring position for the dangerous Urtez. The juniior shortstop came through again with a two-run single. After stealing second, she moved to third on a fly-out by Heather Bowen. Castro came through with a single to center for a 7-0 edge.
In the fifth, Dickman singled and was lifted for pinch runner Sammy Cordova. Miscommunication in the infield allowed Flippen to reach and Cordova to take third base with two outs. Urtez poked a ball through the left side of the infield to seal another Ute shutout.
The Utes are back in action tomorrow with another doubleheader against Fresno State at 1:30 p.m. and Boston College at 3:45 p.m.
