SALT LAKE CITY - Hannah Flippen hit a pair of two-run homers and Utah Softball (21-9, 3-0) earned a three-game sweep of No. 24 Oregon State with a 9-5 victory today.
For the second day in a row, Utah scored four runs in the first frame to set the tone for the contest. After a leadoff walk to Delilah Pacheco, Flippen hit her first homer of the game to put the Utes ahead 2-0. Anissa Urtez and Heather Bowen picked up consecutive singles and were driven in by Ally Dickman's two-run double.
Katie Donovan pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out six on her way to an 11th win of the season. The sophomore re-entered the game after freshman Hailey Hilburn started the fifth inning in relief
OSU got on the board in the second as Kayleen Shafer stroked a two-run double to trim the Ute lead to a pair.
Utah got those runs back in the bottom half of the inning as Kay Kay Fronda tripled to left center. One batter later, Flippen smashed her second home run of the day for a 6-2 lead. The junior second baseman is pacing the Utes with eight home runs, three in the last two games. For the series, she finished 6-for-9 and slugged 1.889 with her round-trippers, a triple and two singles.
The Utes tacked on two more in the third, starting with Kristen Stewart slapping a single to left. After a walk and two outs, a wild pitch brought her home for the first run. Another wild one brought in Hailey Hilburn, making the score, 8-2.
Oregon State made things interesting in the fifth getting a RBI triple from Lovie Lopez and run-scoring singles from Natalie Hampton and Alysha Everett to cut the gap to 8-5.
The final run was scored in the home half when a throw from the backstop went awry on a steal attempt by Urtez and plated Fronda.
The Utes now head to Tucson to play No. 20 Arizona this weekend. The three-game set starts Thursday at 8 p.m. AT and every game can be seen live on the Pac-12 Networks.
