ON DECK Utah concludes the regular season at No. 3 Oregon. The Utes and Ducks will play on Thursday and Friday night with both games scheduled for 7 p.m.
The finale will be Saturday at 2 p.m. with all contests televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
UTAH NOTES - Utah has won 28 of its last 39 contests and owns the No. 30 RPI in the nation. Eight of the Pac-12's nine teams are ranked in the top 40
- Entering the final week of Pac-12 play, Utah leads the league with 30 doubles and rates second in batting (.318), third in on-base percentage (.405) and runs (115) and fourth in slugging (.505)
- Utah currently ranks fourth in the Pac-12 with a 2.84 earned run average. The Utes have only allowed 21 homers, fewest in the Pac-12, and 156 runs, second fewest in the conference.
THe WEEK THAT WAS Utah struggled in a pair of games with No. 13 UCLA last weekend. Allowing 15 runs in the first game before getting shut out in the second. The Utes were out-scored 23-7, with 11 of the runs being unearned.
Kristen Stewart batted .750 in the series with her second triple of the season.
Anissa Urtez hit .400 with a team-high three runs batted and her third home run of the season.
Hailey Hilburn was Utah's most effective pitcher, allowing a single earned run in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
SENIOR SENDOFFS The Utes honored three student-athletes,
Kayce Nieto,
Shelby Pacheco and
Kristen Stewart during their final homestand. The 122 wins experienced by the trio are the most for a senior class since 2003.
Nieto had 18 wins during her first two seasons as a starting pitcher for the Utes and was named All-Pac-12 and All-Freshman during her inaugural campaign.
Pacheco was also a member of the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team and last season, she earned a spot on the first Pac-12 All-Defensive Team. She has started every game she has suited up for as a Ute (204).
Stewart was the third member of the group to be named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team and last season was named NFCA All-Region as well as All-Pac-12, Pac-12 All-Defensive and Pac-12 All-Academic.
FLIPPEN NAMED ESPN'S NATIONAL POW Utah junior second baseman
Hannah Flippen was named the NCAA National Player of the Week by ESPNW on March 30.
Flippen, a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American as a freshman, is a two-time NFCA All-Pacific Region selection as well as a two-time All-Pac-12 honoree and a Pac-12 All-Academic selection.
She currently ranks among the top seven in the Pac-12 in a number of categories including home runs, hits, runs scored, on-base percentage, stolen bases, total bases, slugging, walks and batting average.
In Pac-12 play, she leads the league with a .549 batting average, a 1.118 slugging percentage and a .681 on-base percentage. She is second with 57 total bases, 20 walks, 23 runs scored and six stolen bases. Flippen is also third in the conference with eight homers and fourth with 28 hits.
UTE PAIR NAMED NFCA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT Two Utah Softball student-athletes,
Katie Donovan and
Hannah Flippen, were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 teaM.
Donovan, a sophomore, and Flippen, a junior were part of the 11-player squad selected that includes student-athletes from institutions in California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii
Utah has had two student-athletes honored as Academic All-Americans, Kathleen Thornley in 1983 and Ali Andrus-Saga in 1997. Hannah Clements was the last All-District selection for the Utes in 2012.
UTE PAIR HONORED AGAIN BY PAC-12 A pair of Utah Softball players were honored last Monday by the Pac-12 as
Anissa Urtez was named Player of the Week and
Ally Dickman was named Freshman of the Week.
Urtez led the team in a number of categories including hits, runs scored and driven in as the Utes went 4-0. She also slugged. 714 and her second home run of the season set the tone in the 13-0 opening win over Stanford.
Urtez is ninth in the Pac-12 with a .396 batting average and paces the conference with 15 doubles. Her 63 hits are fifth in the league and defensively, she leads the way with 125 fielding assists. Her 22 runs batted in during Pac-12 play is good for sixth in the conference,
Urtez was a Pac-12 All-Defensive Team selection last year and became Utah's second-straight Player of the Week after
Kay Kay Fronda was honored on Apr. 18.
Dickman led the team with a .600 batting average, a .900 slugging percentages and three doubles. She also accumulated five runs batted in as she notched three multi-hit games.
In conference play, she is currently batting .310 while sitting second in the Pac-12 with seven doubles. She has also accumulated 14 runs batted in, third for the Utes.
This was Dickman's second Freshman of the Week award as she was honored back on March 22.
UTAH DUO EARNS PAC-12 WEEKLY AWARDS Katie Donovan was named Pitcher of the Week and
Kay Kay Fronda was selected Player of the Week by the conference offices on Apr. 18
Donovan earned a pair of wins against Weber State and No. 22 ASU. She also notched the save for the Utes in a 3-1 win over the Sun Devils.
Donovan's 2.50 ERA puts her sixth in the Pac-12, with opponents batting .243 (6th). She also rates fifth in innings pitched and seventh in strikeouts.
Donovan was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week twice last season and this was her first Pitcher of the Week award. She became the first Utah pitcher since
Sammy Cordova (May 5, 2014) to win this honor from the conference.
Fronda led the Utes in a number of categories including hits (4), batting (.667), slugging (1.500), on-base percentage (.571) and total bases (9)
She became Utah's first Player of the Week this season. Junior second baseman
Hannah Flippen was a two-time winner of the award last season.
