EUGENE, Ore. - Utah Softball dropped the opener of its series at No. 3 Oregon, 5-1 despite a complete game from Miranda Viramontes.
After the first nine batters were retired in order, Oregon took the lead on a Lauren Lindvall RBI single in the second inning.
Utah answered in the third with Hailey Hilburn leading things off with a single. Kristen Stewart entered as a pinch runner and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shelby Pacheco. After a pop up, Kay Kay Fronda cracked a double to center that tied the score. Hannah Flippen followed with a single but Fronda was tagged out at home to end the frame.
With three Ducks on the pond, Utah got a 6-4-3 double play to escape the fourth with the game tied. UO went in front, 3-1 on a two-run single by Geri Ann Glasco but Ally Dickman and Pacheco teamed up for a inning-ending play at the plate to keep the Utes in striking distance.
After an error kept the sixth inning alive, Alyssa Gillespie knocked a two-run homer to open up a 5-1 Oregon lead.
Utah got a leadoff single from Bridget Castro in the seventh and a double from Heather Bowen put a pair in scoring position. However, a foul pop and fly out to left secured the win for the Ducks.
For Viramontes, it was her sixth complete game of the season as she allowed three earned runs in six innings of work. Cheridan Hawkins of Oregon allowed one run in seven innings and struck out four Utes. Oregon claimed its fourth-straight Pac-12 title with the win.
The Utes and Ducks will play again tomorrow at 7 p.m. PT. You can catch the game live on the Pac-12 Networks.
