EUGENE, Ore. - Utah Softball set a new program standard for Pac-12 success with a 3-2 victory at No. 3 Oregon on Friday night, 3-2.
Sophomore Katie Donovan, a Salem, Ore. native, pitched her 12th complete game of the season and set a new personal best with her 18th victory. After allowing a run in the second, she held the Ducks to two hits for the remainder of the game.
Kristen Stewart had a pair of hits and one of two Utah home runs on the evening. Bridget Castro also went deep, her first in Pac-12 play, and it provided the difference in a one-run contest. Hannah Flippen also had a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Utes.
Utah clinched a top-four finish in the conference for the second-straight season and earned its 13th league victory, it's most since joining in 2012.
Since Amy Hogue took over at Utah in 2008, the Utes had never beaten a team ranked this high away from home. Utah did take two out of three in a home series against No. 2 Arizona State in 2014. It also marked the first time in 17 contests that the Utes defeated the Ducks.
Donovan wriggled off the hook in the first as UO put two runners on with two outs, but the Ute pitcher induced a grounder to Castro at first to end the frame.
The very next batter was Stewart and she took the first pitch out of the park for her fourth of the season.
In the bottom of the inning, Oregon evened the score. With two outs and a runner on, the Ducks bunted and a throwing error allowed the tying run to come all the way around from first.
Utah answered right back in the third as Delilah Pacheco led off with a single. She moved up on a ground out and would then score on a Flippen single to center.
Oregon tied the score in the fifth when Madi Bishop led off with a homer of her own, the second on the season for the freshman.
That set the stage for Castro's heroics in the sixth and Donovan closed the door on the Ducks.
The rubber match will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks. The Utes will then see where they are headed for the NCAA Tournament with the selection show on Sunday evening.
