SALT LAKE CITY - After a 32-19 regular season, Utah Softball earned an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament, the NCAA announced Sunday night.
The NCAA selection committee, which released the 64-team field on ESPNU Sunday evening, announced that Utah would travel to the Lexington Regional and face Illinois (35-21) on Friday, May 20. The host Kentucky Wildcats will play the Butler Bulldogs in the other contest
"It is exciting to go back because I think we will be more prepared and know what to expect," head coach Amy Hogue said. "That experience should help us in our quest to advance."
Utah and Illinois last played during the 2008 season with the Utes winning 5-2. Utah played Kentucky earlier this season, losing 1-0 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Utes have never played Butler.
Utah just defeated No. 3 Oregon this past weekend in Eugene and is headed to the NCAA Tournament for 14th time. The Utes are also making consecutive trips for the first time since 1994-95.
Utah has an all-time record of 18-29 in NCAA postseason play, including a 17-23 record in Regional Tournaments. The Utes went 2-2 at the Knoxville Regional last season.
The Utes finished fourth in the Pac-12 Conference with a record of 13-10, their most wins since joining in 2012. Utah is receiving votes in the both the ESPN.com/USA Softball and NFCA/USA Today Polls and checked in at No. 30 in the most recent RPI standings
