MIDWAY, Utah - Utah freshman Logan Diekmann has qualified for the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships, hosted by Soldier Hollow from Jan. 30-Feb. 5, 2017.
Diekmann recently finished 12th in the junior men's 10-km classic at the U.S. Cross Country Championships. He also finished fifth in the junior classic sprint earlier in the week.
"Making the World Junior trip is a great honor and I am excited to represent our country on home soil," Diekmann said. "It has been a goal of mine to make this team for a few years now and is a large step in my skiing carrier. Getting the opportunity to ski for the Utah ski team was also a big goal of mine this past season. Skiing for Utah with some of the fastest racers in the country along with qualifying for the World Junior team definitely makes this a year to remember."
"I am so proud to see Logan qualify to represent the USA at the upcoming World Junior Championships," Utah Nordic head coach Abi Holt said. "I can't even remember the last time the junior championships were hosted by the USA, so it's a really special opportunity to nab one of these spots this year. There were 189 junior males competing for those positions today. Logan was tired from a very long day of racing on Sunday, but he skied a smart race today and did what he had to do to cinch the spot. I couldn't be happier for him!"
In his opening collegiate races at the Utah Invitational, he placed 17th in the sprint classic and 19th in the 15-km freestyle.
Diekmann won the USSA's 2016 Dave Quinn Award, given to the outstanding cross country skier at the Junior Olympics based on results and sportsmanship. He was the 2016 U20 Junior National Champion in the men's freestyle sprint and won the 2015 U18 Junior title in the 10-km classic mass start.
