SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah ski team received the History-Maker Award on Tuesday, Oct. 7, presented at the 2017 Ski Affair by the University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library Ski Archives.
The History-Maker Award is presented to individuals or organizations from the Intermountain Region in recognition of their extraordinary accomplishments in winter sports. It is the second time that the Utah ski team has received the award. They were also honored in 2008.
Utah won the 2017 NCAA title, its 11th in school history and the most of any team at Utah. The Utes entered the final day of the championship in second place and had two strong Nordic freestyle races to take the win. Utah has 12 total national championships, including an AIAW title in 1978.
Martin Bergström swept both the men's 10-km classic and 20-km freestyle races at the championships. The Utes had 10 skiers earn All-America honors (top 10) during the meet: Bergström,
Endre Bjertness,
Kevin Bolger,
Joergen Brath,
Sam Dupratt,
Chloe Fausa,
Guro Jordheim,
Martin Mikkelsen,
Merete Myrseth and
Roni Remme. Also notable was Bolger winning the U.S. Classic Sprint Championship. Utah was also the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association regular-season champion.
The Utes have also had an exciting offseason, opening the Spence Eccles Ski Team Building in April, 2017, a state-of-the-art facility that is the first of its kind in NCAA skiing.
