Murphy improves her personal best by nine seconds.
BOSTON and OGDEN, Utah – The Utah indoor track and field season began Saturday afternoon with senior Grayson Murphy lowered her own school record in a fifth-place performance in the 5,000 at the Boston University Season Opener on Saturday while senior Hannah McInturff won the mile as the Utes also competed at the Weber State Winter Open and took home six top-five performances.
In Boston, Murphy completed the 5000-meter race in a time of 15:44.45 to capture the fifth-place finish against many of the same runners she competed with at the NCAA Cross Country Championships just a couple weeks ago. Murphy beat her own school record and improved her personal best by nine seconds.
"She did exactly what we asked her to do and ran an incredibly even race," Head coach Kyle Kepler said. "She ran a really smart race, a good race coming out of the NCAA meet and we would like to think that this will knock out qualifying for the NCAA Championships."
At Weber State, the highlight of the day was a win in the mile from McInturff, as Utah runners took home eight of the first 10 spots in the race. McInturff won in a time of 5:10.68, followed by sophomore Sarah Newton (5:13.25) and Megan Perkins Killian (5:17.21) taking home silver and bronze. Also competing for the Utes in the mile was sophomore Melissa Taggart (fifth, 5:20.63), freshman Bella Williams (sixth, 5:22.35), sophomore Nicole Griffiths (seventh, 5:22.84), senior Dakota Grossman (eighth, 5:25.71), junior Jade Mulvey (ninth, 5:28.22), freshman Astrid Lindgren (11th, 5:28.53), junior Hannah Allred (15th, 5:33.37), freshman Natalie Platil (16th, 5:35.79), and senior Shaylen Crook (17th, 5:42.59).
In the 55-meter event, junior Raynee Helm Wheelock finished fourth in the finals, running her best time of the day of 7.26 in the preliminaries. Sophomore Holly Stallman also competed in this event as an unattached runner and took home third place with a time of 7.23. Senior Alissa Atisme ran a time of 7:20 in the preliminaries but did not compete in the final.
In the 200-meter event, freshman Ruby Jane Mathewson was the lone competitor for the Utes and earned sixth place with a time of 27.02. Looking at the 400-meter event, sophomore Brooke Martin took fourth with a time of 59.37 and freshman Rachel Whipple finished in a time of 1:00.18 to take home sixth place.
The Utes will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Jackson's Open in Boise, Idaho.
