SALT LAKE CITYÂ - With just one week before opening day, UtahUtes.com will preview the upcoming 2017 season with a breakdown of Utah's roster.
This is the second installment of a three-part series on Utah's student-athletes at each position.
OUTFIELDERS
After a breakout postseason,
Kay Kay Fronda returns for her second season in the Ute outfield. The senior leftfielder was named Pac-12 Player of the Week last season and played in every game during her debut campaign for the Utes. She finished second on the team in homers and also slugged .516.
Â
"Kay Kay is slated to leadoff due to her great combination of power and speed," Hogue said. "She had a strong postseason and has the guts to do big things in big moments. She is fearless."
Â
Ally Dickman will either start in the outfield or be the designated player for the Utes. She was a two-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week en route to All-Freshman Team honors at the end of 2016. She finished second to her own teammate, Urtez, in doubles and was third among Utah batters when it came to driving in runs during conference play.
Â
"Ally was our best hitter in the fall by a wide margin, " Hogue said. "She seems to have trained harder than anyone this summer and it has paid off. She is faster and her bat speed has improved from last year."
Â
Delilah Pacheco burst upon the scene last season, starting every game for the Utes. In her first collegiate game, she notched four hits against No. 24 Notre Dame. In her first year at the Division 1 level, she batted .335 and scored 42 runs, placing her third on the team in both categories.
Â
"Delilah put great numbers last year for the first season in our program and her speed is something that will help us win games," Hogue added.
Â
The Utes also have newcomer
Alyssa Barrera, jack-of-all-trades
Sammy Cordova and speedy
Aubrey Peterson to fill in when called upon. Cordova played solid defense in right field during last year's NCAA Tournament and can also fill in as a pitcher.
Â
Barrera was an All-State performer at Bishop Amat HS in California and was the No. 10 recruit in the country according to FloSoftball.com. Peterson played in 41 games as a freshman last season for the Utes.
Â
"Sammy is a solid outfielder and can be a key defensive player as well as help us on the bases," Hogue said. "She is willing to do whatever we need and is someone who we love to put into the game.
Â
Alyssa is slated to start in outfield and with her offensive abilities, once she is settled in, the sky is the limit. Aubrey got some games under her belt and will help us off the bench and pinch-running situations."
