SEATTLE, Wash. – Led by junior
Grayson Murphy in the 5000-meter run, the Utah track and field team got out to a great start at the MPSF Championships in Seattle, Wash.
Â
Two weeks ago at the Husky Classic, Murphy broke the 35 year old school record in the 5000-meter run after posting a school record time of 16:16.62. Friday night at the conference championships, Murphy broke the school record again by improving her time by 23 seconds, after finishing the race with a time of 15:53.24. Murphy's personal record earned a third place finish.
Â
"It was another record breaking night for Grayson. Barring some really fast races in other conference meets this weekend, this race should get her in to the national meet. It was an incredible race and I am really proud of her. She is the first female to break 16 minutes at Utah in the indoor or outdoor so we are really happy for her," head coach
Kyle Kepler said.
Â
Sophomore
Ann Wingeleth competed in the long jump for Utah where she placed fifth overall with her best mark of 19 feet, 2 inches.
Â
"Ann had some good jumps and fouled on a few, but for her to come in here as a freshman and place fifth in this meet is a great thing for her. This attributes to how hard she has worked all season. There is a lot more to come in the future from her," Kepler stated.
Â
Competing in the last event of the night, the distance medley team placed fourth overall in a time of 11:23.68. The distance medley team featured juniors
Hannah McInturff and
Grace Englund, along with sophomore
Caitlin Faust and freshman
Amanda Gehrich.
Â
"This quartet did a great job for us tonight. They ran a great race and finished right about where we thought they could and maybe a spot higher. They definitely ran faster than we had planned on," Kepler said.
Â
Freshman
Holly Stallman competed in the 60-meter dash for the Utes on Friday night. Stallman placed 35
th after finishing the race with a time of 7.85 seconds. Stallman also competed in the 200-meter dash. Stallman finished in 41
st place with a time of 26.17 seconds.
Â
"Holly nearly reached a personal record today in the 60 and was just shy. She ran a great race for a freshman and will continue to improve," Kepler explained.
Â
Three athletes represented Utah in the pentathlon. Competing in a total of five events, Sophomore
Lauren McCluskey finished in 16
th place after totaling 3181 points and junior
Madison Lanford followed McCluskey in the individual standings where she place 17
th with 3027 points. Both McCluskey and Lanford recorded personal bests in the pentathlon. Freshman
Piper Wehrli rounded out the pentathlon group, finishing in 22
nd place with 1985 points.
Â
"The multi group did a nice job today. Lanford and McCluskey did a nice job finishing in 16
th and 17
th and competing hard in each event. Wehrli also competed hard and did a great job trying to figure things out for her first time and will continue to improve in the multi event competition," Kepler said.
Â
Utah will conclude action at the MPSF Championships beginning Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m. PT with the triple jump and mile run.
Â
"This was a terrific first day. It was probably our best first day ever here at the meet. We have a big day ahead of us too tomorrow. Hopefully we can continue to ride the momentum from today into tomorrow's races and be able to finish off a great meet," Kepler said.
