Utah Beach Volleyball Sweeps San Francisco

The Utes split matches in San Francisco, Calif.
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Utah beach volleyball team split its matches on Sunday to close out competition in California for the weekend. Utah picked up its first win of the season after sweeping the University of San Francisco, 5-0. The Utes dropped the last match of the road trip to Pacific, falling 3-2.

Utah's No. 1 pairing of junior Adora Anae and freshman Dani Barton beat the USF Dons in straight sets, 21-19, 21-11. Anae and Barton faced Camille Araujo and Nora Buvarp Lavik.

Freshman Bailey Choy and junior Eliza Katoa teamed up at the No. 2 position for the Utes and would go on to beat Carly Lowry and Emily Reed in two sets, 21-17, 21-14.

Utah paired freshman Torre Glasker and junior Carly Trueman as the No. 3 team, who also won in two sets. Glasker and Trueman won 21-18, 21-12, against Dane Miller and Marjolijn Oskam.

Taking the win in the No. 4 pairing was freshman Brianna Doehrmann and junior Tawnee Luafalemana. Doehrmann and Luafalemana knocked off Kate Ashman and Shannon Levinson 21-15, 21-11.

Rounding out Utah's team total, sophomore Berkeley Oblad and freshman Lauren Sproule teamed up to face Montana Green and Trish Koutsoukos. Oblad and Sproule came out with a win after dropping the first set 21-17, but coming back to win the next two sets 21-17, 15-6.

Utah closed out Sunday's competition against Pacific, where the Utes fell 3-2 to the Tigers.

Anae and Barton dropped a close first set, 22-20, to Pacific's No. 1 duo Lexi Elman and Andie Shelton. Utah took the second set 21-17, but would drop the third set 17-15. Utah's No. 2 pairing, Choy and Katoa, also fell in three sets, against Katrin Gotterba and Maycie LaBass. The Utes lost the first set 21-15, forced a third set after winning 21-16, but would fall short in the third set, 15-13.

Utah's No. 3 duo of Glasker and Trueman beat Emily Baptista and Taylor Poncetta in straight sets, 21-14, 21-18. Along with Glasker and Trueman, Doehrmann and Luafalemana picked up a win in the No. 4 position for Utah. The duo took the first set 21-13, but dropped a close second set 21-19. Doehrmann and Luafalemana won the third set, 15-13, against Janie Feldsher and Alex Holt.

Sophomores Emily Twohig and Megan Boudreaux rounded out the team score at the No. 5 position in the dual against Pacific. Twohig and Boudreaux fell to Ashlyn Fleming and Skylar Wine in two sets, 21-19, 21-16.

The Utah beach volleyball team is back in action next Friday and Saturday, March 17-18, at the Outrigger Hawaii Invitational. The Utes will play matches against Florida State, USC, Hawaii, Nebraska, and Arizona.
