SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team dropped a midweek game to Utah Valley, 9-7, on Wednesday evening.
Utah (9-9) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning but UVU came back to score four runs in the second to take a lead they wouldn't lose. UVU increased their lead to 7-3 in the sixth. Down 8-4, the Utes cut the lead to 8-7 with three runs in the seventh inning. The Wolverines added an insurance run in the eighth to put their lead at 9-7.
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Utah while
Max Schuman was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
On the mound,
Jacob Rebar pitched five innings in the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. He falls to 2-3 with the loss.

Trenton Stoltz,
Chase Bauerle, Josh Tedeschi,
Hunter Rodriguez and
Dylan Drachler all pitched in the game.
In the first, Keirsey,
Oliver Dunn and
Dallas Carroll all singled to score the first run of the game. A ground out sent in Dunn while Schuman hit an RBI double to right field to score Carroll, giving Utah a 3-0 lead. Utah Valley came right back in the top of the second for four runs on four hits. A two-RBI triple sent in a pair of runs, which was followed by an RBI double and RBI single to give UVU a 4-3 lead.
The Utes struggled keeping the Wolverines off the base paths, as UVU had runners on in every inning but the first. Utah Valley increased its lead in the sixth with three runs for a 7-3 advantage. A leadoff walk was followed by a double and a hit batter loaded the bases, which were cleared by a three-RBI double.
Utah cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a run after a single from
Hunter Simmons and RBI ground out by Schuman. Utah Valley got the run back in the seventh before Utah scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a one-run game, 8-7.
Zack Moeller was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and
Kyle Hoffman hit an RBI triple to center field that the outfielder misjudged. Keirsey followed with a double to score another run. Keirsey would score later in the inning on an error on a failed pickoff attempt.
Utah Valley added an insurance run in the eighth, and Utah struggled to get anything going offensively in the late innings.
The Utes begin a three-game series at 12
th-ranked Stanford on Friday, March 24.
