SALT LAKE CITY— The University of Utah women's tennis team will travel to Ojai, Calif. for the Pac-12 Conference Championships on Wednesday.
This year's tournament will be run as a team event, a change from previous years where it consisted of singles and doubles competitions. Play begins on Apr. 26 and will conclude with the championship match on Apr. 29.
The Utes (9-10, 3-7 Pac-12) are slated to face No. 9 seed Arizona in the first round of competition on Wednesday at 11 a.m. The winner of that match will face No. 1 seed Stanford (18-2, 10-0 Pac-12) in the second round on Thursday.
MATCH POINTS
- Utah is coming off a 4-1 win over Colorado this past Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center. In singles play,
Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa made sure she capped her Senior Day with a win in the No. 6 spot, 7-5, 6-1.Â
Whitney Turley came back from a 4-0 deficit in the first set to win the match over Chloe Hule, 7-6, 6-2 and a win by
Margo Pletcher in the No. 1 spot secured the victory for the Utes.
- The Utes defeated Arizona earlier this season, 4-3, in Tucson. Brianna and
Whitney Turley earned singles victories after Utah grabbed the doubles point. However, the match was sealed by
Jena Cheng 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 in a dramatic battle at the No. 4 spot.
- Last season at Pac-12's, Pletcher advanced to the Round of 16 in singles play.
Brianna Turley also competed in the main draw while Cheng, Gerstner Da Rosa,
Alexia Petrovic and
Taylor Calton all participated in the consolation draw.
- In doubles action, Pletcher and
Brianna Turley beat No. 2-ranked Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr of Cal before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Petrvoic, Calton and Gerstner Da Rosa all took part in doubles action as well.
- Petrovic leads the Utes this season with 10 wins in dual match play while
Whitney Turley and Gerstner Da Rosa have winning records.
Jena Cheng sits at the .500 mark with a 9-9 record on the season
- Pletcher and
Brianna Turley have six wins as a doubles tandem, primarily at the top of the Ute order. Meanwhile, Gerstner Da Rosa and
Whitney Turley have the best winning percentage (.600).Â
