CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Utah baseball team battled No. 1 Oregon State through 16 innings before falling 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Tied at 3-3 entering the 16
th inning,
Dallas Carroll lifted Utah to a 4-3 advantage with a two-out home run in the top of the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Oregon State beat out a bunt single before an RBI triple re-tied the game at 4-4. The Utes intentionally walked the bases loaded before a sacrifice fly sent in the game-winning run.
Carroll had three hits on the night to lead the Utes at the plate, driving in two runs.
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. and
Josh Rose each had a pair of hits while
Wade Gulden also drove in a run.
Utah (12-15, 3-8 Pac-12) was strong on the mound with
Riley Ottesen allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts over seven innings.
Tanner Thomas pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with five strikeouts in relief.
Chase Bauerle pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, three walks and two hits in the loss.
Both teams had 10 hits. Utah stranded 15 runners on base throughout the game while the Beavers left nine.
Each team scored a run in the first inning. The Utes took advantage of three walks, which would lead to a Utah run on an infield ground out when the Beavers couldn't make the double play. Oregon State got on the board as the first two hitters each had extra base hits.
The Utes left two runners on base in the fourth inning before breaking through in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.
Ellis Kelly led off the inning with a single and
Oliver Dunn followed with a one-out single to put runners at the corners. An infield ground ball scored a run after OSU bobbled a potential double play.
Oregon State tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth after back-to-back hits to lead off the inning, and took a 3-2 lead in the seventh on two outs after an RBI double following a leadoff walk.
Utah tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the ninth. Keirsey and Carroll both singled in the inning, and Dunn scored on a wild pitch with two outs to extend the game.
Oregon State had a leadoff single in the ninth and after a sacrifice bunt, a strikeout and ground out ended the inning. Both teams left a runner on base in the 10
th after walks, and the Utes stranded two in the 14
th, also after two walks.
