EUGENE, Ore. – The Utah track and field team closed out competition at the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday, competing in five events in Eugene, Ore.
Â
"This is a very young group we had this weekend. We bring everyone back next year and so we are excited to come back to this meet with a whole new level of experience that they gained here today," said head coach
Kyle Kepler. "We competed hard today and it was great to see everyone step up while being surrounded by such a high level of competition."
Â
Utah finished in 12th place in the team standings at the conference meet with 16 points. Oregon claimed the title of Pac-12 Champions with 189 points. USC placed second with 135 points, Colorado finished third with 78 points, Washington followed in fourth with 72 points, and UCLA rounded out the top-five teams with 63 points. Arizona State (58.5), Stanford (47), Arizona (46), California (45), Washington State (45), and Oregon State (21.5) completed the team standings.
Utah opened the meet in the final of the 4x100 meter relay. Utah's relay team of sophomore
Raynee Helm Wheelock, freshman
Ann Wingeleth, junior
Madison Lanford, and freshman
Holly Stallman, finished in seventh place with a time of 48.12 seconds.
Â
"Right out of the gates, our 4x100 team came out and competed hard to set the tone for us today. This was the first appearance for us in the 4x100 final so this was a great step for the group," Kepler said.
Â
Freshman
Amanda Gehrich competed in the 1500-meter run for Utah after qualifying for the final on Saturday in the preliminary round. Gehrich finished the race in fifth place with a time of 4:25.20.
Â
"This was the first time for her at the Pac-12 meet and just had an awesome race. Very savvy race and just made all the right moves she needed to in order to stay out of trouble and avoid the collisions. We are very excited for her and to have a freshman be in the top-five in the Pac-12 says a lot about her ability," Kepler said.
Â
In the 5000-meter run, freshman
Poppy Tank paced the Utes after finishing in 24
th place with a time of 17:01.05. Juniors
Hannah McInturff and
Jessica Sams finished in 27
th and 28
th places, respectively. McInturff recorded a time of 17:07.79, while Sams finished in a time of 17:10.12.
Â
"The 5K kids put themselves right in the race but the competition was incredible and so it just wasn't meant to be for them today. Our kids would have had to PR by at least 20-25 seconds just to score. Our conference is just incredibly tough in the distance races and we are still growing and trying to get better," Kepler stated.
Â
Wingeleth represented Utah in the high jump and finished in 18
th place. Wingeleth recorded a mark of 5 feet, 3.75 inches (1.62m).
Â
"Ann hadn't competed in the high jump for most of the year, but she looked good and had some solid efforts over the opening bar. She just struggled with the steps and placement over the bar. It was still a great weekend for her being a part of the 4x100 team and the long jump yesterday," Kepler said.
Â
Utah closed out the meet in the 4x400 meter relay with the team consisting of sophomore
Caitlin Faust, freshman
Brooke Martin, junior
Rhianna Williams, and freshman
Sarah Newton. The relay team finished in 11
th place in a time of 3:49.56.
Â
"Even though this group didn't score, I thought the relay team really ran well and came out strong. Each leg of the relay really showed toughness and competed at a high level," Kepler said.
Â
The Utah track and field team will next be in action at the NCAA West Regionals over the three-day span of May 25-27. The Utes who qualify to compete in the NCAA West Regionals will travel to Austin, Texas.
