AUSTIN, Texas – Junior
Grayson Murphy qualified for the NCAA Championships on Friday night after competing in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division I West Preliminary in Austin, Texas.

Murphy finished second overall and first in her heat to with a mark of 10:04.35 to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. This mark is a personal best time and also improves her school record time, which Murphy previously had set earlier this season.

After qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Murphy will now have represented Utah in all three NCAA Championships during the year (NCAA Cross Country Championships, NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, and NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships).

"Grayson ran really smooth and looked really good. We are certainly excited for her to move on and compete at the NCAA Championships. To qualify for three championships in one year is incredible. It is a very rare occurrence and not many people do that. This is a terrific feat in our program, especially because it has only been done a few times before," head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "We are excited for her and thank our whole staff for helping her get to this point."

The Utah track and field team will close out the west preliminary on Saturday when freshman
Amanda Gehrich competes in the 1500-meter run for a spot in the NCAA Championships. Murphy will close out competition in the 5000-meter run on Saturday. Gehrich will compete at 5:30 p.m. MT, while Murphy is scheduled to race at 7:05 p.m.
