AUSTIN, Texas – The Utah track and field team closed out the NCAA Division I West Preliminary on Saturday night. Junior
Grayson Murphy and freshman
Amanda Gehrich represented Utah on the last day of competition in Austin, Texas. Â
Gehrich qualified for the second round of the 1500-meter run on Thursday night at the west preliminary. In the second round of the 1500-meter run on Saturday, Gehrich finished in 21
st place with a time of 4:33.49.
Â
"Amanda is a true freshman and being inexperienced kind of hurt her a little bit. She didn't quite get in great position and was in a difficult heat. She ran her hardest and ran well for how the heat was setup. The race came out very slow at the beginning and didn't get to where we would have liked," Kepler said.
Â
"For being a freshman, she really handled it great and is being very positive. She definitely understands what she needs to do and will learn, grow, and get better. It was an amazing freshman season for Amanda and she has an incredibly bright future," Kepler stated.
Â
Murphy closed out action for the Utes in the 5000-meter run. Murphy placed 22
nd overall with a time of 17:03.92.
Â
"Grayson was right in the mix until a surge in the race that got her behind a little bit. You have to give her credit because she ran the steeple yesterday and now running the 5K today, that is really tough to run double like that. She almost got the job done but now we can just focus on one race, being the steeple, for the championships in Eugene," head coach
Kyle Kepler said.
Â
Murphy will represent the Utah track and field team at the NCAA Championships in two weeks. The championships will be held Wednesday, June 7, through Saturday, June 10, in Eugene, Ore.
