EUGENE, Ore. - Utah's
Grayson Murphy finished third in her heat in the 3,000 steeplechase at the 2017 NCAA Championships to move on to Saturday's final.
Â
"Grayson ran terrific today. She advances on to run for a national title on Saturday afternoon, which will be on ESPN if you can't watch it live. She ran a smooth race and ran like she had been here before. She ran like someone who believed in her training and that's all you can ask from someone with the stakes this high," head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "She responded to that kind of pressure as well as we could have hoped for. She had that knack today and she has had it all year."
Â
Murphy had a personal-best time of 9:53.04, lowering her previous personal-best time by over 10 seconds (10:04.35). She had the seventh-fastest time overall between the two heats. Murphy also holds the school record in the event.
Â
"To get a new PR by about 11 seconds, compete with the best in the nation, and run how hard she did at the biggest race of the year really says a lot about her as a person and where she is at as an athlete. She works extremely hard and has incredible support from her teammates. We know she is ready to give a great performance on Saturday as well," Kepler said.
Â
Murphy is guaranteed All-America honors by reaching the final.
Â
The final will consist of 12 racers, the top five finishers from each semifinal heat plus the next two fastest times overall. The finals run at 3:54 p.m. PT/4:54 p.m. MT on Saturday, June 10.
