SALT LAKE CITY - After leading the Utah ski team to the 2017 NCAA Championship, Utah Director of Skiing
Kevin Sweeney has been named the recipient of the 2016-17 Don Reddish Award, presented annually to the coach of a sport other than football, men's and women's basketball and gymnastics who is deemed to have had the most successful season the previous year.
Utah's 2017 NCAA title is its 11th in school history.
Martin Bergström swept both the men's 10-km classic and 20-km freestyle races at the championships. The Utes had 10 skiers earn All-America honors (top 10) during the meet. Also notable was
Kevin Bolger winning the U.S. Classic Sprint Championship. Utah was also the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association regular-season champion.
The 2017 honor is Sweeney's fourth Don Reddish Award. He also won in 2003, 2011 and 2013.
Sweeney is in his 23rd year overall at Utah after first being hired as an assistant Nordic coach in 1991, and in his 14th year as Director of Skiing. He has been part of five team national championships at Utah (1993, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2017) and he has helped lead skiers to 27 individual national titles.
Reddish coached the men's swimming and diving team from 1955-90 and won 17 conference titles while compiling a dual-meet record of 265-83-6 (.701).
