HUNTSVILLE, Utah and WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. –
Martin Bergström won the men's 10-km classic on a day that saw four total top five finishes between Nordic and alpine events at the Utah Invitational and Montana State Invitational. The Utes moved into second at the Montana State Invitational with a strong Nordic outing while the alpine team concluded its portion of the Utah Invitational in fifth place.
In Nordic at the MSU Invite, it was Bergström's second win in three races this season. He has four career victories. Håkon Hjelstuen has finished fifth in every race this season. Bjørn Riksaasen had the best finish in his collegiate career thus far with a seventh-place run.
Jacob Engström placed 14
th for the Utes. Utah had the top men's Nordic team on the day, scoring 94 points.
"I trained hard throughout the summer and fall and felt that on a good day I'm strong enough to win," Bergström said. "Today I had great skis and body and could really floor the gas pedal to pull that win off! Feels even better to do it on a day where we are the highest scoring men's team! Go Utes!"
In women's Nordic in the 5-km classic,
Guro Jordheim had her best finish of the season with a third-place run.
Karianne Moe also had a season-best 14
th-place finish while
Mariah Bredal finished 17
th.
"Woke up and listened to some good music before entering the stadium," Jordheim said. "It's a good feeling to feel everyone being a little nervous, it gets me more excited and focused for the race. Today's conditions were perfect for me, at the same time Kevin did an awesome job on my skis. It was such a great feeling hitting that podium! Proud of the guys being the best men's team! Way to go!"
Utah moved into second at the MSU Invite with 165 Nordic points on the day. The Utes trail Colorado, 494 to 428.5. Denver is third with 420 points followed by Montana State with 404.
In alpine at the Utah Invitational,
Ann-Kathrin Breuning continued her string of top-five finishes with a fourth-place run in the women's slalom. She has been in the top five in all five races this year.
Sabine Krautgasser finished 16
th with
Julie Mohagen 25
th in the race.
In men's slalom,
Martin Grasic led Utah with a 13
th-place finish, tying his season-best run.
Sam Dupratt finished 21
st with
Ty Sprock 27
th and
Huston Philp 34
th.
Linus Walch did not finish his first run after a crash.
Utah stands fifth at the Utah Invitational with 239.5 points. Denver leads with 329 points followed by Montana State (293.5), Colorado (273) and New Mexico (258) as the top four.
