SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team will begin its fall season this Friday, Oct. 5
at the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill.

Competition is set to begin this Friday and run through Sunday, Oct. 7. The Utes will be competing against 12 other teams including the host Northwestern, DePaul, Pittsburgh, Michigan, Michigan State, UIC, Chicago State, Columbia, Princeton, Lewis, Illinois, and Kentucky.

On Friday, there is anticipated to be two rounds of doubles and one round of singles play. Saturday and Sunday will consist of one round each of doubles and singles.

Seniors Lead the Way
The Utes return two seniors to the court this fall with
Taylor Calton and
Brianna Chisholm.
Â
Calton, hailing from Highland, Utah, finished the 2017-18 season with eight wins in singles play and was 8-7 in doubles with
Whitney Hekking. Highlights of her season included earning Pac-12 Player of the Week after going 4-0 in singles and doubles against Utah State and Boise State. Calton also started the season off with five singles wins in a row, as well as five straight doubles wins with Hekking.

A Kaysville, Utah native, Chisholm played dominantly at the No. 2 spot, earning eight singles victories to finish off the 2017-18 season. She collected the accolades of ITA Scholar-Athlete, Pac-12 All-Academic first team, and also earned the ITA Mountain Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award.

Welcome to Utah
Utah added four newcomers in freshmen
Emily Dush,
Lindsay Hung,
Anya Lamoreaux and
Madison Tattini.

From Chula Vista, California, Dush is a four-star recruit that was ranked top-75 overall in the nation, playing at No. 1 singles in high school. She most recently won two ITA tournaments in doubles play, also reaching the semifinals and two quarterfinals in singles.

Hung is a five-star recruit from San Clemente, California, who was ranked top-40 in the nation and was a high school All-American. A three-time league champion, CIF finalist, and was a multi-year finalist in the National Level 2 and 3s. She was also a finalist at the Northridge ITA Tournament, earning a 10.75 UTR, which was the highest on her team.

Lamoreaux hails from Mesa, Arizona, where she was a two-time state champion in doubles, while leading Mountain View High School to a state championship as a team and two runner-up finishes. A four-star recruit, she was ranked the No. 4 recruit out of the state of Arizona and No. 26 in the Southwest region. Was also named azcentral sport's All-Arizona Girls Tennis Player of the Year in 2016.

Finally, from Lexington, Illinois, Tattini comes into the University of Utah as a five-star recruit. She was ranked in the top-40 in the nation, winning the Illinois Class 1A State Championship in 2016. Tattini also earned a fourth-place finish in 2017 at the Midwest Level I Closed singles, while also being a finalist at the 2017 Midwest Level I Closed doubles play.

Returning Utes
Redshirt freshman
Jasmine Rich, redshirt sophomore
Leah Heimuli and junior Hekking are all returning to the Utes after the 2017-18 season.

Rich sat out her freshman season with the Utes with a redshirt. Prior to the University of Utah, Rich played at Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, California, her freshman year before finishing her career at East High School in Salt Lake City. She helped Torrey Pines to a conference championship as a freshman, lettered one season at East High, and finished second in the state in singles her sophomore season.

As a sophomore, Heimuli sat out her first year at the University of Utah with a redshirt. Prior to Utah, she was an All-American in doubles play as a freshman at BYU-Hawaii. She was also named ITA Rookie of the Year in 2017 and Pacwest Freshman of the Year.

Coming off of a successful sophomore season, Hekking was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete and was also Pac-12 All-Academic second-team. Playing at the No. 5 and 6 position in singles, she attained an overall record of 7-7 on the year. She was also paired with Calton at the No. 2 and 3 spots in doubles, they were able to start the 2017-18 season off with five straight wins.

Petrovic Earns Pac-12 Honorable Mention
For the sixth time since joining the Pac-12, the Utes were also able to land a player on the Pac-12 All-Conference team, with
Alexia Petrovic earning honorary status. Petrovic shined for the Utes in her final season, coming away with a 9-9 record at the No. 1 position in singles and was also 8-7 with
Jena Cheng at No. 1 doubles that included a 4-3 conference record. This was Petrovic's first Pac-12 All-Conference honor.

The Burr Ridge, Ill. native played all 18 of her dual matches at the No. 1 position this season after playing at the No. 3 in 2017. She claimed two ranked wins during the 2018 season in singles play, including a victory over then No. 11 ranked Ena Shibahara of UCLA, who won Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year. Her win against the Bruins was the first top-15 singles win for the Utes since 2008. She ended the 2017-18 season being ranked 104
th overall in singles in the ITA rankings.

In doubes, Cheng and Petrovic knocked off three ranked foes, starting with a win over the No. 58 doubles team out of Arizona State. They continued their winning ways to take down the No. 10-ranked team out of UCLA and the No. 32 team out of USC, finishing the season ranked No. 78 by the ITA.

Utah Finishes with 10 Duel Wins for the 2017-18 Season
Against Pac-12 competition, the Utes were able to top Arizona with a score of 5-2. Early in their season, the Utes were able to capture the Courtside Classic at the University of Minnesota, defeating the Gophers with a score of 4-3.

Throughout the season, the Utes were also able to notch victories against DePaul (6-1), Utah State (7-0), Denver (4-3), Weber State (4-1), Boise State (4-3), UAB (4-1), and Fresno State (6-1). Their last victory of the season came against in-state rival BYU in the Deseret First Duel, taking the title against the Cougars for a ninth straight year with a final score of 4-3.

To end the season, the Utes were unable to record a first match victory in the Pac-12 Conference tournament, as they fell to the Oregon Ducks with a score of 0-4 to close out the year.
