Season PreviewÂ
Utah will welcome a large group of fresh faces to the track and field program this season. With many freshmen added to the roster, the Utes will look to veteran leadership to get these new comers up to speed. Notable freshman include
Scarlet Dale,
Skyler Blair, and
Brooklyn James. Dale had an impressive freshman cross country season as she led the Utes to the finish line in two of the five races she competed in. James is a two-sport athlete at Utah where she played soccer for the Utes this last season. She won the 2018 6A Oregon state 400 championship and finished sixth in the 800, while helping the 4x100 relay team finish third overall. She also managed to win four-straight conference titles in the 800m from 2015 to 2018. Blair, who hails from Beaverton, Ore., swept the 100 and 300 hurdles this past season at the 6A state championships. She also finished second in the 300 hurdles, while taking third in the 100 hurdles back in 2017.
Â
In the short sprints, Utah welcomes back senior
Raynee Helm-Wheelock and sophomore
Jackie Martin. Last season, Helm-Wheelock captured 35
th at the MPSF Championships while recording a new personal-best time of 7.77 in the 60-meter dash. She ranks third all-time at Utah in the indoor 60-meter and outdoor 100-meter events. Helm-Wheelock also ranks fifth in the indoor 55-meter event. Martin returns for her second season with the Utes after an impressive freshman campaign. Martin earned a season-best time of 25.57 at the MPSF Championships in the 200-meter event which moved her into eighth all-time at Utah. She was also a part of the 4x400 indoor relay team that ranks third all-time at Utah and the 4x100 outdoor relay team that set the school record at the Utah Spring Classic last season.
Â
Senior
Megan Killian, junior
Sarah Newton, and junior
Caitlin Faust will be returning for Utah in the long sprints. Killian, last indoor season, ran a personal best time and placed second at the Mountain State Games in the 800 (2:16.04). In the outdoor season, Killian finished 22nd at the Pac-12 Championships in the 1,500-meter event and ran a personal best time of 4:33.42 at the Mt. SAC Relays in the 1,500-meter event. Newton looks to build off a strong season last year where she placed 12th and recorded a new personal best in the 800 at the MPSF Championships. In outdoor, Newton recorded a new personal-best and placed seventh at the Pac-12 Championships in the 800-meter event to qualify and move on to the NCAA West Preliminary Round where her season would ultimately come to an end with a 26th place finish. Newton is ranked eighth all-time at Utah in both the indoor and outdoor 800-meter event. Faust returns for her third year as she aims to have another strong track and field season. Last year, Faust finished 10th at the MPSF Championships running a personal-best time of 2:09.31. In the outdoor season, Faust ran a personal-best time in the 800-meter event at the Pac-12 Championship to capture a sixth-place finish at a spot in the NCAA West Preliminary. At the Preliminaries, Faust earned 17th and moved on to the semifinals where she would place 19th and end her season. Faust ranks sixth all-time at Utah in the outdoor 800 and seventh in the indoor 800.
Â
Sophomore
Ruby Jane Mathewson will be a key returner for the Utes. Last indoor season, Mathewson competed in the pentathlon at the Washington Invitational, where she placed 25th with 2,953 total points. Mathewson's best finish during the pentathlon was an 11th place finish in the 800-meter event. Another big return for the Utes is junior
Sarah Feeny. Feeny, who just returned from a two-year LDS mission, was a key contributor to the program before she left. Feeny competed in back-to-back seasons at the NCAA West Preliminary in the 1,500-meter event and in 2016 notched a top-20 finish placing 19th overall.
Â
Senior Transfer
Kolbi Sims will be a great addition to the track and field team. Sims transferred from San Jose State where she primarily competed in the heptathlon. In 2017, Sims scored a new personal best of 5,402 points in the heptathlon and placed second at the Mountain West Conference Championships.
On the distance side, Utah will look to returning runners such as junior
Poppy Tank, sophomore
Bella Williams, and senior
Sadie Wassum to lead them throughout the season. Tank, is a two-time cross country all-region runner and just qualified to represent the United Kingdom's Under 23 cross country team at the European cross country championships. Tank ranks fifth all-time at Utah in the indoor 3,000-meter event and ninth in the outdoor 5,000-meter event. Williams is coming off a strong cross country season and looks to get started on a good note. Last year, Williams finished in 16th and recorded a new personal best of 9:42.10 in the 3,000 steeplechase at the MPSF Championships. Williams ranks 10th all-time at Utah in the 3,000-meter indoor event and the 3,000 steeplechase. In her senior season, Wassum looks to take that next step forward and move on to the NCAA West Preliminary Round in the 1,500-meter event where she has been so close to qualifying throughout her career. Wassum ranks seventh all-time at Utah in the indoor mile.
Â
In the field, senior
Eliza Hansen and sophomore
Regan Crofts return for the Utes. Last year, Hansen finished in 17th in the high jump at the Pac-12 Championships and recorded a personal-best high jump mark of 5'5" (1.65m) at the Stanford Invitational where she placed fourth overall. Crofts last season, threw a season-best 121'1" (36.92m) to earn fourth at the Aztec Invitational in the javelin. As a sophomore, Crofts looks to add the training and experience she gained from last season to improve herself and her throws this season.

"We really have a group of kids that are committed and excited about the direction of our program and certainly we are looking to improve not only within the Pac-12 but we want to get more kids to the NCAA meet than we ever have," Kepler explained. "We think we have enough talent to do so and the coaching staff and I, coach
Chad Colwell and coach
Mackenzie Wartenberger, are super excited about the development of these kids."
