Utes break more records on final day of competition
MINNEAPOLIS – Sarah Lott and Daniel McArthur each set school records in the 200 back and another relay record fell as the Utah swimming teams finished competition at the Minnesota Invitational this evening.
Utah dominated the 200 back events with Lott and McArthur leading the way with their respective school records. Audrey Reimer actually broke the mark in prelims with a time of 1:56.36 as she and Lott both achieved NCAA "B" cut times. Mandy Gebhart went 2:00.69 in the prelims and took third in the evening's finals.
Meanwhile, McArthur was pushed by teammate David Fridlander who swam the event in 1:43.21, the third fastest in Utah history and a NCAA "B" cut mark. Jackson Cunningham also turned in a solid 1:47.41 to place third overall this evening.
To close a fantastic weekend of swimming, the men's 400 free relay of Felix Chiun, Rodolfo Moreira, Clay Stoddard and Austin Phillips set a new Utah mark of 2:53.60. The women also won their event with a team of Lott, Gillian St. John, Aryanna Fernandes and Ianire Casarin in 3:20.37
The Utes also rolled in two more events, the 1650 free and 200 fly. In the distance event, Nicholas Becker won with the second-fastest time in Utah history (14:58.40) while Rahiti De Vos (4th all-time, 15:16.90) and Tyler Klawiter (8th all-time (15.23.27) also achieved NCAA "B" cut marks. Sara McClendon hit the standard for the women, winning in 16:20.96. Gebhart took second and Kristina Miletic was third.
In the 200 fly, Fernandes paced the women with a NCAA "B" cut mark of 1:58.01, the third fastest time in Utah history. Jordan Anderson placed second (1:59.50) with Emma Lawless going third after a prelim swim of 1:59.55 (6th fastest all-time).
Chris Taber topped the men's contingent with a NCAA "B" cut time of 1:46.62, the eighth fastest swim in Utah history. Cole Giandinoto was second and Tony Puertas placed third overall.
In the 100 free, St. John picked up another win for the Utes in 49.76. Phillips captured it for the men with the third fastest time in Utah history (42.93). Moreira was right behind him in 43.57, another NCAA "B" cut time (4th fastest all-time). Stoddard swam the eighth-fastest time in Utah history during prelims with a 43.81.
Genny Robertson took the 200 breast for the Utes with a NCAA "B" cut time of 2:11.98. She paced Grace Horvath and Darby Wayner who took second and third, respectively. Ethan Dillard (4th all-time, 1:59.09) and Andrew Britton (6th all-time, 1:59.20) had solid results for the men.
Utah now heads into its winter break with action resuming at Don Reddish Pool in 2019 with the Deseret First Duel vs. BYU, Jan. 25-26
