Becomes first Ute to earn All-America honors in three seasons.
ATLANTA –Senior punter Mitch Wishnowsky became the first three-time All-American in Utah football history with his announcement as a second-team Walter Camp All-American at tonight's Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards.
Â
Wishnowsky, a unanimous consensus All-American in 2016 when he won the Ray Guy Award as the country's best punter, earned All-America honors on three major teams in 2017 (Walter Camp, FWAA, AP).
Â
Wishnowsky attended the College Football Awards as the first three-time finalist in Ray Guy Award history. Braden Mann (Texas A&M) won the 2018 Ray Guy Award over Wishnowsky and James Smith (Cincinnati).Â
Â
Wishnowsky ranks second in the Pac-12 and ninth in the nation in punt average (45.1). He has led Utah to a No. 2 Pac-12 and No. 15 national ranking in net punting (40.65). The senior from Perth, Australia, has placed 22 punts inside the 20-yard line, including nine punts at or inside the 10-yard line, and has 19 punts of 50+ yards.
Â
In his career, Wishnowsky is averaging 45.7 yards per punt and just nine of his 170 punts have been touchbacks. His 61 punts of 50+ yards ranks second all-time at Utah and he has placed 72 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Â
Wishnowsky, a first-team Walter Camp All-American in 2016, is one of six Utes all-time to receive second-team Walter Camp All-America honors. The others were Alex Smith (QB, 2004), Eric Weddle (DB, 2006), Zane Beadles (OL, 2009), Caleb Schlauderaff (OL, 2010) and Matt Gay (K, 2017). He is one of two Ute punters to make the Walter Camp All-America team, along with two-time first-team selection Tom Hackett (2014-15).
Â
The Walter Camp All-America team is one of the five teams used by the NCAA to determine the season's consensus All-Americans. The others are the Sporting News, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The Walter Camp is the nation's oldest All-America team.
Â
Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first named an All-America team in 1889. The team is selected by the Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.
