SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's tennis team will host their first home matches of the spring season this weekend. On Thursday, Utah State (4-4) will pay a visit to the George S. Eccles Tennis Center, with the match set to being at 6 p.m. Then on Saturday, the Utes will have two matches, playing against the University of Denver (4-2) at 1 p.m., followed by a match against Weber State (2-3) at 5:30 p.m. They will then match up against Boise State (2-3) on Sunday at 11 a.m., wrapping up play for the weekend.
The women's tennis team will be providing pizza for fans who attend the match on Thursday against Utah State, along with the match on Saturday against the University of Denver. For this weekend's match against Weber State, the University of Utah will be hosting Tommy Tough Day, where the men and women will play simultaneously at 5:30 p.m. The proceeds of this event will go towards the Child Heart Disease research and families.
Utah notes
The Utes are coming off of a tournament victory at the Courtside Classic, where they defeated the University of Minnesota to improve to 2-1 on the year. Against the Gopher's, The Utes started off with an early advantage by taking the doubles point over the Gophers. The doubles team consisting of
Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley bested Caitlyn Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar at the No. 1 position, with a final score of 6-1.
Taylor Calton and
Whitney Turley then wrapped things up by getting a win of their own over Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei on the No. 3 court, with a score of 6-4. Brianna Turley then got the Utes off to a strong start in singles with a win over Trina Kreinis at the No. 2 position, 6-1, 6-1. On the No. 4 court,
Jena Cheng earned a win over Barbara Mancera after three sets and a final score of 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Taylor Calton then finished things up by defeating Camila Vargas Gomez at the No. 6 position, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to give the Utes the win and take the title of the Courtside Classic.
Opponent notes
The Utah State Aggies are coming off of a 7-0 loss against the University of Denver over this past weekend. In doubles, sophomore Rhoda Tanui and Hannah Jones lost, 0-6, at the No. 1 spot to senior Julia O'Loughlin and junior Bianca Mok, who are the No. 57 ranked doubles tandem in the nation. Senior Maggie O'Meara and freshman Sasha Pisareva won, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot against freshmen Hada Chang and Anna Riedmiller. The doubles point came down to the No. 3 spot, where senior Sabrina Demerath and redshirt freshman Alexandra Taylor went into a tiebreaker with freshman Camille Verden-Anderson and redshirt junior Arisha Ladhani, losing 6-7 (2). In singles, Tanui lost to No. 123 Mok at the No. 2 spot, 4-6, 0-6. O'Meara then lost at the No. 5 spot to senior Gracia Mboko, 2-6, 2-6. Ladhani clinched the win for the Pioneers at the No. 3 spot with a 7-5, 6-2 win over sophomore Lucy Octave. The teams played out the remaining matches, with Jones losing at the No. 4 spot, 4-6, 3-6, against Chang. Demerath lost, 5-7, 2-6, at the No. 6 spot against Verden-Anderson. Pisareva lost her first set at the No. 1 spot against No. 47 O'Loughlin, 4-6, but came back to win the second, 6-4. The match was decided in a tiebreaker where Pisareva lost, 9-11.
The Denver Pioneers are coming off of a 7-0 win against Boise State. The Pioneers won three tight doubles matches to open the day. Camille Verden-Anderson and Bianca Mok had the first win of the afternoon, then Julia O'Loughlin and Hada Chang battled from a 5-2 deficit to win, 7-5. With the doubles point secured, Gracia Mboko and Anna Riedmiller played out their match to win, 7-6 (8-6). Denver won every singles match for the second-consecutive day to complete the weekend sweep of Utah State and Boise State.
The Weber State Wildcats are coming off of a 4-3 win against the Idaho State Bengals. The Wildcats struggled in doubles action not picking up a single victory giving the Bengals the doubles point advantage going into singles play. In singles action Caitlin Herb started everything off with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hristina Cvetkovic in the No. 1 spot. The No. 2 and No. 3 spots went to ISU, giving them a 3-1 overall match lead. Those were the last two wins the Bengals would snag as WSU picked up three more singles wins. Dominique Beauvias defeated Melissa Coburn 6-2, 7-6 (7) in the No. 4 spot and then Morgan Dickason defeated Megan Poe 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot to tie the entire match up 3-3. McKenna Lloyd in the No. 6 spot was the last to finish as her match went into three full sets. Lloyd came out with a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 victory to give Weber State the overall 4-3 match victory.
Boise State is coming off of a tough 4-3 loss against the PAC-12's Colorado Buffaloes. The Broncos (2-3) took the doubles point to put themselves in a great position going into singles play. The duo of Lilian Poling/Wilhelmina Palmer started things off on court one, defeating opponent Ronaldson/Daniel 6-3. Then the pair of Anja Dokic/Wiktoria Nosek fell on court two, 6-3, setting up court three to be the deciding match for doubles. The pairing of Vanessa Timm/Hanna Kantenwein fought through a great match, defeating Huang/Wojcik 7-5. Up 1-0, the Broncos started singles play. However, they were unable to keep up the momentum through singles, as the Buffaloes (5-0) were able to get things going. On court one, Dokic put up a strong fight, in set two after losing set one 6-2, but eventually fell 7-5 in set two, surrendering the match to Huang. Then on court two, Poling hung tight to Hule in set one, but fell 7-6 and dropped set two, 6-2, making it 2-1 Buffaloes. On court three, Palmer was outstanding, battling with Ronaldson, dropping set one 7-6, but came back to take set two, 6-3. However, with the third set tied 6-6, Ronaldson took the third set tiebreak to make it 3-1 Buffaloes. Then on court four, Kantenwein also forced a third set against CU's Daniel. After falling in set one, she took set two 6-3, but fell in set three, 6-3 as the Buffaloes clinched the match, 4-1. The Broncos played out the final two courts and took both points, as Menjivar won on court five, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 and Timm won on court six, 7-6, 7-5 to make the final score 4-3.
