SALT LAKE CITY – Senior All-American
Grayson Murphy prepares to head to College Station, Texas, to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet will take place Friday and Saturday, Mar. 9-10, at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium. Murphy will compete in the women's 5,000-meter race which is scheduled to take place on Friday, Mar. 9, at 8:25 p.m. (CST).
"She's excited and we're certainly excited for her to get back to College Station," Utah head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "A year ago, she was fouled, tripped and fell and ran great for about two miles. Then with about a half mile to go all of the adrenaline from the fall kind of left her body and she went ahead and finished but certainly not where she wanted to finish so hopefully we can get a little redemption."
Murphy qualified for NCAA's in December, 2017 at the Boston University Season Opener. At this meet, Murphy completed the race with a time of 15:44.45, which broke her own school record in the event and currently ranks 10
th in the nation. Just 16 runners qualifying for the event.
Murphy did not compete the rest of the indoor season as she recovered from a health concern. The Utes staff has been taking some precautions to make sure she comes back healthy.
"It's been a slow process coming back," Kepler explained. "We want to make sure we get it right and don't have any more setbacks so we can have a great outdoor season as well. That's kind of been the plan, her last few weeks of workouts have gone very well and we feel like she is getting really close to being able to compete at that championship level again."
Murphy is a three-time All-American at Utah between cross country and track. Finishing the 5,000 will give Murphy her fourth All-America honor at Utah. She finished 15
th in this race last year after being tripped early in the race to earn second-team All-America honors. Murphy earned first-team All-America honors in the outdoor 3,000 steeplechase in 2017 and was an All-American in cross country this past fall.
Murphy transferred to Utah from Santa Clara. A Salt Lake City native who attended West High School, she originally began her collegiate career as a soccer player at Sweet Briar College in 2013. Murphy is a civil engineering major who has earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors in both track and cross country.
