SALT LAKE CITY - No. 9 Arizona State broke a fifth-inning deadlock when Morgan Howe hit a bases-clearing triple en route to a 7-2 win over Utah Softball.
Hailey
Hilburn pitched into the fifth frame before being lifted with the bases loaded and one out. Unfortunately, Howe's big hit followed her exit and all the baserunners were attributed to the junior pitcher.Â
Breanna Macha picked up her
11th win of the season and second in Pac-12 play for ASU with a complete game, striking out five.Â
ASU threatened at the beginning of the contest, putting a pair of runners in scoring position but
Hilburn induced a pair of fly balls to
Aubrey Peterson in right field before striking out the final batter of the inning.
The Sun Devils struck in the second as Jade
Gortarez started with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and moved to third on a ground ball. With one out,
Rylee Maston, making just her second start of the season hit a ball back to
Hilburn. The Ute pitcher alertly looked
Gortarez back to third, but only halfway. When she turned to try and make a throw to first, the ASU shortstop changed direction, coming home and beating the throw for a 1-0 lead.
Utah tied it up in the third.
Ryley Ball was hit on the foot with one out before Julia
Noskin and
Alyssa Barrera followed with singles to load the bases.
Heather Bowen smacked a ground ball to third that brought home Ball to even the score.
In the fifth, the No. 9 hitter, Bella Loomis worked her second walk to start the frame. Taylor
Becerra singled and a Utah error loaded the bases with one away. Howe connected against
Katie Donovan, on in relief, for a triple that rolled all the way to the wall in right center for a 4-1 lead.
ASU blew it open in the seventh when
Becerra tripled down the right-field line and scored on a Danielle Gibson single. Marisa
Stankiewicz followed with her eighth homer of the season to take a 7-1 advantage. The Sun Devils entered this series batting .190 in Pac-12 play but have scored 19 runs in 12 innings so far.
Utah did get a run back in the bottom of the inning.
Hilburn and Alyssa
Palacios singled before
Noskin picked up her second knock of the day, bringing in the junior who had switched to right field after starting in the circle.
Tomorrow is Bark in the Park for the series finale with first pitch at noon MT and free admission to all entrants.
