EUGENE, Ore. - Utah Softball was defeated by No. 2 Oregon in the series opener between the two teams, 8-0.
UO's All-American pitcher Megan Kleist improved to 18-5 on the season, striking out five and lowering her ERA to 0.89. Utah'sÂ
Katie Donovan fell to 9-9 on the year.
Â
The evening did not start well as Donovan issued a leadoff walk and Gwen Svekis hammered the first pitch she saw for a two-run homer, her 14th of the season.
In the second, Donovan allowed another free pass to begin the frame. An infield hit and walk loaded the bases and a second wild pitch of the inning brought in a run. Lauren Burke entered as a pinch-hitter and connected on a two-run single for a 5-0 advantage.
Â
Utah's best chance to get on the board arrived in the fourth.
Alyssa Barrera and
Heather Bowen singled to put a pair on base. However, Kleist wriggled out of the jam with a pair of come-backers to the circle and a strikeout.
Oregon added to its lead in the fourth as Donovan's first offering to the No. 9 hitter, Haley Cruse, was taken out of the yard for her first round-tripper of the season
The Ducks closed it out in the sixth.
Lauren Lindvall started it off with an infield single and stole second before scoring on a Utah error. Alexis Mack walked the Ducks off with a single as the Utes matched a season-high with their fourth fielding miscue of the game.
Â
Game two of the series between these teams is tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Network.
