SALT LAKE CITY – No. 23 Utah fell to No. 17 UCLA in the Utes Pac-12 home opener in four sets on Friday, September 21 in the Huntsman Center.

Dani Drews had a monster performance against the Bruins leading the team with 18 kills and 20 digs.

The MUSS and Utah fans showed out at the Huntsman Center as the official attendance was 4,068. That's the second largest crowd of all time and second time ever the official attendance was over 4,000.

The first set was tight until UCLA went on a 4-0 run to take a 16-12 advantage. The Utes found themselves in a six-point deficit, but clawed their way back to get within 21-19 and force the Bruins to use a timeout. Out of the timeout, UCLA closed out the set and took the lead in the match.

After dropping the first set, the Utes came out on fire in the second set. Utah led by as many as 12 points and held UCLA to only nine kills. Drews had eight kills hitting .462 alone in the second set.

UCLA led by as many as eight in the third set, but Utah got their serving going leading to a comeback. Trailing 19-11, the Utes went on a 9-2 run to come back and get within one. With the crowd rocking, Utah eventually tied the score at 22. The Utes ended up spoiling three set points and had one of their own spoiled before the Bruins took the set 29-27.

With the massive comeback coming up short in the third, Utah needed to bounce back quickly in the forth, but UCLA didn't let them. The Bruins once again built a large lead and didn't let the Utes back in it to close out the match.

Bailey Choy and
Kennedi Evans both had three service aces in the match. Choy also finished with 32 assists and 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.

Lauga Gauta picked up her seventh double-double of the season as well finishing the match with 15 kills and 13 digs.

This match puts Utah at 8-5 overall and 0-2 to start Pac-12 play.

Next up, the Utes will be on the road taking on No. 22 Washington State and No. 13 Washington. The first match will be at Washington State on Friday, September 28 at 8 p.m. MT.
