CRAFTSBURY, Vt. and NEDERLAND, Colo. – The Utah Nordic and alpine ski teams are looking to go into the NCAA season strong after recent solid performances in various FIS races around the world.
At the U.S. Cross Country Championships, Karianne Moe won the College Cup after her performances in the classic races earlier this week. She beat out Dartmouth's Katharine Ogden, who swept last year's NCAA races. Utah finished second overall as a team behind Northern Michigan, while Vermont finished third.
In Sunday's men's 30-km freestyle, Ola Jordheim finished fourth among college skiers, second among RMISA skiers and 22nd overall. In the women's 20-km race, Leah Lange led the Utes, finishing 10th among college skiers, fourth among RMISA skiers and 23rd overall. Noel Keeffe finished 24th in the boys 10-km skate.
In alpine, Eirin Engeset won a FIS giant slalom race at Eldora. Julia Mohagen finished seventh with Katie Parker 13th to lead the Utes. In the men's GS race, Huston Philp placed fourth with Tomas Birkner de Miguel sixth. Dominic Demschar finished 13th with Fredrik Maurstad 16th and Ty Sprock 20th. The Utes are also competing in a GS at Mont Ste-Marie at Canada with Linus Walch finishing 15th.
Roni Remme has had several strong performances on the World Cup circuit, including finishing eighth in the slalom at Semmering at the end of December. Mark Engel has also been competing on the World Cup circuit and won a FIS slalom race in Panorama in Canada earlier in December.
Utah opens its 2019 season on Jan. 9 with an RMISA giant slalom qualifier.
