STANFORD, Calif. – No. 18 Utah volleyball pushed No. 2 Stanford to their limits on Sunday, October 20 in Maples Pavilion, but the Cardinal edged the Utes in five sets (17-25, 25-20, 26-24, 18-25, 16-17).
Â
Dani Drews led the team with 21 kills and 14 digs.
Brianna Doehrmann was all over the court and finished with 25 digs matching her season high.
Â
Utah had two cracks at the match leading 14-12 in the fifth and Stanford held them off to force extra points. Once the Cardinal got it to extra points, they had a match point spoiled by Utah before taking the match with a 17-15 win in the fifth.
Â
After dropping the first set, Utah settled in and had a much better second set finishing with 17 kills and only having one error to hit .325 on the Cardinal. Utah built up as big as a five-point lead looking to even things up, but Stanford made a run to tighten things up. Up by one, Drews got a kill and
Kenzie Koerber had back-to-back aces to put the Utes up 23-19.
Berkeley Oblad got the kill to even the match up for the Utes as they bounced back and took the second set 25-20.
Â
In the third set, Utah trailed by as many as five, but used their block to get back in the set. The Utes had 4.0 blocks over a 10-point stretch to come back and tie the Cardinal at 19. Once Utah tied it up, they didn't slow down taking a two-point lead. Stanford held off two set points for Utah, but Drews got a kill followed up by Utah's seventh block of the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Â
Stanford controlled things in the fourth set as they trailed in the match. Utah kept it tight early, but the Cardinal stretched out their lead to eventually force a fifth set.
Â
Neither team gave an inch in the fifth set as the teams traded points back and forth. With the score tied at 12, Koerber and Oblad both got kills giving Utah two match points. Stanford fought them both off, winning three straight points to eventually have a match point of their own. The Utes spoiled one match point, but couldn't spoil the second one as Stanford got the victory.
Â
This was also the third five-set match in a row that Utes have played going back to last Sunday's win against USC.
Â
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres had a career-high 57 assists posting her third straight 50-assist match as well. Ka'aha'aina-Torres also had 10 digs and 3.0 blocks.
