OKLAHOMA CITY – Utah Softball's
Hannah Flippen was named to the U.S. Olympic Softball Team roster this morning. The three-time All-American is part of the 18-player roster than will compete next July at the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
Â
"What an incredible honor and I cannot wait to experience this journey," Flippen said. " We have been waiting 12 years to go back to the Olympics and to be a part of that is truly special. My time as a Ute has been instrumental in the path to this moment. I could not be more proud to represent the University of Utah and the United States."
Utah's all-time leader in runs, hits and batting average, Flippen concluded a stellar career (2014-17) by becoming the first four-time All-Pac-12 honoree in school history. She was the first Ute named Pac-12 Softball Player of the Year in consecutive seasons and the first person in the history of the conference to win that award, along with Defensive Player of the Year honors, in the same campaign. She currently serves as an assistant coach for the Utes and plays professionally with the Chicago Bandits
Â
"This has been an incredible process that has taken years of evaluation about great people that play softball at the highest level," said Head Coach Ken Eriksen. "We could not have picked anyone better to be part of this group. I think it is very important to recognize the organizations they came from and the player development they have attained to get them to this point."
The 2020 USA Softball Women's National Team roster includes two Olympians, 12 members of the 2018 World Championship team and 13 members of the 2019 Pan American Games Gold Medal team. The Red, White and Blue is also loaded with former or current student athletes from four athletic conferences: Big Ten (two), Big 12 (two), SEC (five) and Pac-12 (five) who represent 13 NCAA Division I universities. Five athletes have won one or more NCAA Women's College World Series (WCWS) National Championships with their respective university, while four have garnered USA Softball Player of the Year honors at least once during their career.
