SALT LAKE CITY – No. 17 Utah volleyball survived its second five-set match of the weekend defeating Arizona (22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 15-8) behind 25 kills from
Dani Drews in the Huntsman Center.
Utah dug deep early in their seventh Pac-12 five-set match to take a 7-3 lead and never looked back, continuing to push their lead out to close out the match with a win to move to 16-7 overall and 8-4 in the Pac-12.
Drews was on fire most of the afternoon hitting .392 only making five errors on 51 swings to go with her 25 kills. It was her 10
th match this season with 20-plus kills.
After Arizona came out strong and won the first set, Utah went on a 6-0 run to go up 12-5 in the second. The Wildcats tightened things up, but Utah won four of the final five points to even the match up.
The third set was tight until the Utes went on a 7-1 run to go up 21-16. Utah used that advantage the rest of the way to take their first lead of the match.
Utah found themselves in a hole early in the fourth and tried to climb their way out of it getting within two a couple times, but Arizona held on pushing the match to a fifth set.
Wanting to avoid finding themselves in a hole in the fifth, Utah had a much better start winning four of the first five points. With the momentum on their side and the crowd behind them, they kept rolling eventually closing out the Arizona Wildcats to give the Utes a perfect weekend.
Kenzie Koerber had her second double-double of the weekend finishing with 11 kills and 10 digs while also coming up with 6.0 blocks.
Megan Yett had her seventh match in a row with double-figure digs posting 13 against Arizona.
Zoe Weatherington also had 13 kills on the night with eight digs.
Utah finishes their four-match home stand 3-1 and will now be on the road for four straight matches starting with USC this Thursday, November 7 at 8 p.m. MT.
