WEST YELLOWSTONE, Wyo. – The Utah Nordic ski team had its first competition of the season on Saturday with freshman Sam Hendry winning a FIS 10-km freestyle race at West Yellowstone, Wyo.
"It feels great to get back into the swing of race season," head Nordic coach
Miles Havlick said. "We have received about 12" of snow here in West Yellowstone since we arrived so the conditions were quite soft which is always tricky for the first race of the year. I am quite happy with how everyone skied today and big congrats to Sam for a win in his freshman debut!"
The Utes placed three men in the top 10 with Luke Jager finishing fifth and Logan Diekman placing seventh.

th and
Bjørn Riksaasen 19
th.
"I was really happy with the race today," Hendry said. "We have had two really good weeks of training between our camp in Casper and our few days here in West Yellowstone and it really showed. It was tough racing at altitude and the conditions were quite soft but great to start the season with a strong performance."
Julia Richer led the women's 5-km race with a fifth-place finish followed by
Leah Lange in sixth and
Guro Jordheim seventh.
Karianne Moe finished 13
th.
"It was a good feeling to finally kick off the new ski season," Richter said. "It was even more fun how strong we all skied as a team, which showed how hard we all worked this summer and fall. I'm excited for more races!"

Fredrik Landstedt said. "It was the first competition of this season and we showed that we will have a very strong team this year again. Great for Sam to get the win and Luke also impressed with his fifth place."
The NCAA season begins in January in Colorado.
