LAS VEGAS – The Utah women's tennis team had a great outing on the second day of competition at the UNLV Invitational, highlighted by a pair of Utah doubles teams advancing to the championship match of the main draw, as well as freshman
Katya Hersh earning herself a spot in the flight three finals in singles play.
The Utes won seven of ten matches on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, beginning the day with the semifinal round of doubles. Coming off their upset of the No. 17-ranked doubles team in the nation from Ole Miss yesterday, Hersh and
Anya Lamoreaux were set to face Georgia Tech's Gia Cohen and Nami Otsuka in the semifinals. Hersh and Lamoreaux continued their great play as partners and posted an 8-5 win.
Looking for a chance to join their teammates in the finals,
Madison Tattini and
Whitney Hekking also took on a pair from Georgia Tech. Tattini and Hekking's match went to the wire, but in the end the Ute duo came away with an 8-7 victory over Kenya Jones and Victoria Flores to advance to the championship match of the main draw. Utah teammates Hersh/Lamoreaux and Tattini/Hekking will square off to take the doubles title tomorrow morning.
In the consolation bracket of flight two doubles,
Jasmine Rich and
Madison McKay dropped a tough match, 3-8, to Madisen Olsen and Taryn Fujimori from Oregon.
Looking to carry momentum over to singles, Hersh and Lamoreaux had matches in the main draw in flight three on Saturday. Hersh faced Georgia Tech's Rose Garcia Gross and went back-and-forth in the semifinal round. The Ute freshman picked up the victory in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6, to earn a spot in the singles finals, as well as previously landing in the doubles finals.
Lamoreaux was tasked with facing Colorado's Sophia Derivan in her semifinal matchup. In the competitive match, Lamoreaux came up just short, dropping the match 6-4, 6-4.
Looking to bounce back in the consolation brackets, Tattini started things off for the Utes in flight one and cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Colorado's Maria Campos. Hekking also notched a consolation win in flight two, downing Georgia Tech's Nami Otsuka 6-0, 6-4.
In flight four singles, McKay and Rich both picked up huge wins on Saturday. Rich downed UNLV's Hsuan Yu Lin handedly in the first set, 6-0, and followed it with a second set win of 6-4 to close out the match. McKay took on Colorado's Ky Ecton and dropped the first set 6-0. Then, McKay rallied and took the second set 6-2 before running away with the match and winning the third set 6-1.
Wrapping up singles action,
Emily Dush faced Antonia Balzert from Colorado in her flight two singles match. Dush took the first set 6-3, but Balzert was able to take the next two sets to win the match.
The Utah women's tennis team will be back in action for the finals of the UNLV Invitational tomorrow morning. Sunday's play will begin at 10 a.m. PT. A full recap of the day's action will be made available on UtahUtes.com following the competition.
