ATLANTA – Senior defensive linemen Bradlee Anae and Leki Fotu and junior defensive back Jaylon Johnson were announced as Walter Camp All-Americans at tonight's Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards show. Anae earned first-team honors while Fotu and Johnson were both second-team selections. It is the first time that Utah has had three players on the Walter Camp All-America team.
Â
Utah has had 16 players named to the Walter Camp All-America teams in its history. Anae is the eighth Ute to receive first-team honors, joining Jordan Gross (OT, 2002), Louie Sakoda (K, 2008), Shaky Smithson (PR, 2010), Star Lotulelei (DT, 2012), Tom Hackett (P, 2014-15), Nate Orchard (DE, 2014) and Mitch Wishnowsky (P, 2016). Fotu and Johnson join second-team selections Alex Smith (QB, 2004), Eric Weddle (DB, 2006), Zane Beadles (OL, 2009), Caleb Schlauderaff (OL, 2010), Hunter Dimick (DE, 2016), Matt Gay (K, 2017) and Wishnowsky (P, 2017-18).
Â
Anae and Fotu are the fourth and fifth Utah defensive lineman on the Walter Camp All-America teams, joining Lotulelei (2012), Orchard (2014), and Dimick (2016). Johnson becomes Utah's second Walter Camp All-American defensive back along with Weddle (2006).
Â
Anae, who earned the Morris Award as given to the most outstanding defensive lineman as selected by the league's starting offensive linemen, was a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award, and earned semifinalist honors from the Lombardi and Bednarik awards. A two-time first-team All-Pac-12 selection, his 12.5 sacks this season is tied for seventh in FBS and his 29.5 career sacks is tied for the school record and ranked fourth among active FBS players.
Â
Fotu, also a two-time first-team All-Pac-12 pick, ranks third on the team with 8.5 tackles for loss (1.0 sack) and has 27 total tackles along with two pass breakups and a forced fumble. He is a block eater and a disruptive force in the middle, helping Utah lead the country in rushing defense (70.3 ypg).
Â
Johnson ranks fourth in the Pac-12 with 13 passes defended and is third in the league with 11 total pass breakups. He has two interceptions on the year, including a pick six against Washington. Johnson also earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors twice and has been an academic standout for the Utes.
Â
The Walter Camp All-America team is one of the five teams used by the NCAA to determine the season's consensus All-Americans. The others are the Sporting News, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The Walter Camp is the nation's oldest All-America team.
Â
Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first named an All-America team in 1889. The team is selected by the Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and communications directors.
