SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Nordic ski team traveled to Canmore, Alberta, Canada this weekend for the Haywood NorAm as the team continues its prep for the NCAA season beginning in February. The event featured some of the top U.S. and Canadian skiers.
"All in all, I think we had a great showing in Canmore this past weekend," head Nordic coach
Miles Havlick said. "As a team, we put in a lot of hard work over the fall but you never really know how everyone stacks up until the first races of the season. Even though some are still searching for their form, it is good to know that on any given day, any one of the Utes can be vying for a podium with the best in North America!"
The highlight of the weekend was a win in the women's sprints for sophomore
Julia Richter. She also won the sprint qualifying race. Richter was fifth in the women's 5-km classic. Senior
Guro Jordheim had three consistent finishes, placing fourth in the 5-km classic and 10-km freestyle races while finishing seventh in the sprints after reaching the semifinals of the heats. Junior
Karianne Moe finished 10
th in the 5-km classic for her best finish of the weekend.
For the men, freshman Samuel Hendry reached the men's final of the sprint races to finish sixth, rallying after a tough qualifying race. He also placed fifth in the 15-km freestyle race. Freshman Luke Jager reached the semifinals of the sprints and placed seventh. Sophomore
Noel Keeffe was ninth in the sprint qualifying race before finishing 15
th overall.
"A very strong start to the season for the Nordic team," Utah Director of Skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said. "The women and our freshmen men had impressive results in Canmore. Some of our more experienced returners on the men's side are still recovering from sickness but we are confident that they will be improving throughout the winter."
