Hilburn homers, drives in five
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Utah Softball closed the SPC Elite Invite on Sunday with an 11-3 win over Hofstra. Hailey Hilburn homered and drove in five, while Alyssa Palacios also left the yard, plating three, and Sydney Sandez picked up the win
Things did not go well at the start of the contest as Hofstra scored three times in the first. Courtney Scarpato doubled to right center to open the scoring and Devyn Losco drew a walk with the bases loaded. Angelina Ioppolo singled through the left side for another run and a 3-0 lead.
Despite falling behind, the Utes were not going to go down quietly. Hilburn started her day with a single to center that scored Alyssa Barrera. In the second, Julia Noskin singled to left with the bases loaded, scoring Jordyn Gasper and BreOnna Castaneda to tie the game, 3-3.
The Utes stayed on the attack and took the lead in the fourth. Gasper and Castaneda both reached base one more time and scored on the Palacios homer, her first of the season. Hilburn followed with a two-run shot, her second of the season, scoring Barrera. Palacios finished 6-for-9 at the plate this weekend in four games while Hilburn started every game and batted .500.
The junior center fielder got in on the act with a RBI groundout in the sixth, plating Palacios and Hilburn ended the game with a double just inside the left-field line that brought in Ally Dickman and Noskin.
Sandez entered in relief of Hilburn and tossed three shutout innings, allowing just one walk on her way to a second win this season.
Utah is back in action Thursday night at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. The Utes start play against Colorado State with first pitch at 7:30 p.m. PT
