The University of Utah women's basketball program led by 18 points early in the fourth quarter, but hit a brick wall that allowed Arizona State to go on a 20-0 run to defeat the Utes 60-58 loss. Utah fell to 18-7 overall and 7-7 in Pac-12 play.
The Utes were held scoreless for the last eight minutes of the game while turning the ball over nine times in the fourth quarter. Utah held its opponent under 70 points for the second straight game, but just couldn't come away with the win after being outscored 20-3 in the final quarter.
The Utes had three double digit scorers, led by
Megan Huff with 15 points, nine rebounds and a career-high seven assists.
Dru Gylten and
Kiana Moore added 12 and 10 points each with
Erika Bean contributing six points, six rebounds and seven assists.
The Utes jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, holding Arizona State scoreless until the 6:21 mark in the first quarter. Moore scored eight of Utah's 17 points in the first quarter with the Utes shooting 47-percent from the floor to take a 17-11 lead into the second, despite hitting a two-minute scoring drought at the end.
After taking a 10-point lead early in the quarter, Arizona State was able to make it a five-point game with 5:48 on the clock, but that would be their last field goal for over three minutes with the Utes taking off on a 13-1 run to take a 34-17 lead. Huff scored 10 of her 12 first half points in the second quarter, propelling the Utes to its 14-point advantage at halftime (34-20).
Arizona State was able to get within eight points early in the third quarter, but the Utes continued to push on offense with Gylten giving the Utes a 13-point lead with 7:15 on the clock on a three from the NBA line. Utah's guard play was phenomenal in the third quarter, with Gylten and Bean contributing on both ends, including Bean sending the Utes into the fourth quarter with a 55-38 lead on an and-one.
It was once again the fourth quarter that caused problems for the Utes after leading by as many as 18 points with over eight minutes to go in the game.
Andrea Torres's three-pointer with 8:09 on the clock would be Utah's last points of the game with Arizona State going on a 20-0 run to take a 60-58 lead for the win.
Utah will return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 when they host the Washington Huskies. The game is set for a 7 p.m. MT tip in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
