FRESNO, Calif. - The 44th ranked University of Utah women's tennis team defeated Fresno State earlier today, with a final score of 4-1. With this win, the Utes are now 9-3 overall on the season.
"This was a good win for our team in a very tough place to play. Our young players are learning more and more with every match," said head coach Mat Iandolo.
The Utes started things off strong in doubles, as they were able to earn the doubles point against Fresno State. Down 0-1 against the Bulldogs to start doubles, Whitney Hekking and Leah Heimuli rallied a comeback at the No. 2 position, defeating Georgia Lawson and A.C. Hummel with a final score of 6-3. To then seal the doubles point, Brianna Chisholm and Madison Tattini knocked off Ella Husrefovic and Deniza Marcinkevica on the No. 1 court, with a final score of 6-3.
Heading into singles, Emily Dush kept things rolling with a victory of her own at the No. 3 spot, topping Deniza Marcinkevica with a score of 6-2, 6-4. Chisholm then quickly followed with a win at the No. 1 position, defeating Jennifer Timotin in a competitive match, with a score of 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. To then seal the victory for the Utes, freshman Madison Tattini closed things out with a victory on the No. 2 court, defeating Ella Husrefovic 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, to give Utah the 4-1 win over Fresno State.
The University of Utah women's tennis team will be back in action this Saturday, March 16th, as they will take on BYU in the Deseret Duel. The Utes' match against the Cougars is going to be held in Provo, Utah, with competition set to start at 3 p.m. MT.Â
