SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team was able to come away with a victory today at the Eccles Tennis Center, as they were able to sweep the Oregon Ducks with a score of 7-0. With this win, the 47th ranked Utes are now 11-5 overall, and move to 2-3 overall in Pac-12 conference play.
"I felt like we did a really good job of learning from last weekend and also did a great job in doubles, once again," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We then did a great job of focussing on getting a good start in singles. Any Pac-12 win is a great win, and it sets us up for a run for the rest of the year."
In doubles, the Utes had an early advantage as Oregon did not have enough players to provide a team for court No. 3, resulting in a forfeited match. Only needing one win for the doubles point, Brianna Chisholm and Madison Tattini were able to defeat Rifanty Kahfiani and Julia Eshet at the No. 1 spot, with a final score of 6-3. With this win, the Utes took the 1-0 lead going into singles.
In singles, Oregon did not have enough players to fill all 6 courts, resulting in a forfeited match on court No. 6, allowing the Utes to jump to a quick 2-0 lead on the Ducks. Whitney Hekking then provided a quick win of her own at the No. 5 position, as she was able to top Taryn Fujimori with a score of 6-2, 6-0. Emily Dush then provided the winning point on court No. 3, as she was able to knock off Paiton Wagner with a score of 6-1, 6-4, to seal the Utes victory. Other Utah victories came from Lindsay Hung on court 4, Chisholm on court 1 and Tattini on court 2, to give the Utes the 7-0 sweep over Oregon.
The University of Utah women's tennis team will be back in action next week for three matches on the road. The Utes are first set to take on the 43rd ranked University of Denver on April 2nd, with a time for that match yet to be determined. They will then follow their match against Denver with two Pac-12 conference matches against 11th ranked UCLA and 16th ranked USC. The match against UCLA is set to take place on April 5th, with compeition set to start at 1 p.m. MT. Their final match of the week against USC will take place on April 6th, with competition set to start at 1 p.m. MT as well.
