SALT LAKE CITY– Utah track and field standout junior
Sarah Feeny will represent the University of Utah at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, March 8-9, in Birmingham, Ala. Feeny will compete in the mile run with competition slated to begin on Friday at 5:35 p.m. (CST) and Saturday at 4:10 p.m. (CST).Â
Â
"We are just super excited and certainly hopeful that Sarah will be able to go and do some damage in her first indoor championship," head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "The indoor championships are truly the best of the best and there are kids who don't qualify for this meet but do qualify for the U.S. indoor championships so the standard to make this meet is high and they only take four percent of the total athletes competing in division one."Â
Â
Feeny qualified for the mile event, exactly one year to the day when she returned from a two-year LDS mission, at the 2019 MPSF Indoor Championships where she posted a time of 4:36.67. This is a personal best time for Feeny and moved her into second-place all time at Utah, right behind Amanda Mergaert's time of 4:35.35 that was set back in 2013. This was also the fastest recorded time of the season for the Utes. Â
Â
This is Feeny's first individual berth and is the third-consecutive year that Utah will be represented at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Former All-American
Grayson Murphy represented the Utes back in 2017 and 2018, competing in the 5,000-meter event. Â
Â
"There will be some really great competition and she will get exposed to exactly what she loves and that is a great high level of competition. We think she can definitely do something really special and we are certainly going to try and get that done," Kepler said.Â
Â
The two-day meet will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex and marks the second time the city or state has hosted this event. This is the 10th NCAA national championship the facility has hosted since opening in 2011. Â
