BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Utah junior
Sarah Feeny will compete for a NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championship after qualifying for the finals in the mile run at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Friday.
Â
Feeny finished fourth in the first heat and tallied the sixth-fastest time of two heats overall, finishing in a time of 4:37.24. The Ogden native was an automatic qualifier in her heat and will now compete in tomorrow's finals, which will be held at 4:10 p.m. CT.
Â
"Sarah led a good portion of the race and got eaten up a little bit in the last lap and a half or so, but finished right behind the leaders," Utah head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "I am just really proud of her. She has not been at 100 percent, having a little bit of a cold, but she remained super positive and just kept her wits about her. She did what she always does today. She is a great instinctive racer and that was what happened today."
Â
The top four in each heat were automatic qualifiers for tomorrow's finals, as were the next two fastest time. Friday's event had a wreck in Feeny's heat, and after protest, there will now be 11 racers in tomorrow's national championship finals.
Â
Along with Feeny, other competitors in tomorrow's finals will be Alexis Fuller (Boise State), Hannah Meier (Michigan), Sarah Edwards (Virginia Tech), Julia Rizk (Ohio State), Taryn Rawlings (Portland), Lauren Gregory (Arkansas), Katie Rainsberger (Washington) and Millie Paladino (Providence).
