SAN FRANCISCO – University of Utah women's tennis senior Brianna Chisholm has been named the 2019 Pac-12 Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced today. This is Utah's first scholar-athlete of the year award since joining the conference.
"I have been fortunate to coach a lot of very good student-athletes in my 28 years as a head coach," head coach Mat Iandolo said. "Breezy embodies every quality you would want in a student-athlete. She is a great leader of our team who consistently puts everyone else ahead of herself. To be awarded in this fashion in such a prestigious academic and athletic league is quite an honor. I am so proud of her."
Chisholm is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic first-team selection and a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete. She has also been a part of the Dean's List and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester she has been enrolled at Utah.
"I'm so grateful for an athletic director and coaches who have emphasized how important our studies are," Chisholm said. "I have always loved to learn and study hard, but without the support of my coaches who allow us to put school first, this wouldn't have been possible."
Last season, Chisholm was honored by the ITA Mountain Region by earning the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award. The award is given to players who exhibit outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
This season on the court, Chisholm has been integral in Utah earning its first top-40 ranking since 2014, ranking as high as No. 38 in the ITA this season. She has played at both No. 1 singles and doubles, proving she is one of the most consistent players in the conference.
She has nine wins in singles and nine wins in doubles, coming away with key victories for the Utes throughout the season. In her nine singles wins this season, she's only been forced to a third set once. Among her key wins this year she has two against ranked opponents in No. 69 Stacey Fung of Washington and No. 33 Julia Rosenqvist of California.
To see Chisholm and the Utes in action one more time this season, fans can come out to the Eccles Tennis Center for Senior Day on Saturday, April 20 when Utah takes on Colorado for its regular season finale. The match is free to the public with Senior Day ceremonies starting at 10:30 a.m. MT and the match beginning at 11 a.m. MT.
