SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Softball grabbed an early lead but could not hold on to it during an 11-2 loss to No. 3 Washington this evening.

Alyssa Barrera kept her batting average above the .400 mark and
BreOnna Castaneda smacked a RBI double as the Utes could not maintain some early momentum.

Utah took the lead in the second as Barrera worked a leadoff walk and moved up on a ground ball to third. Castaneda doubled to the wall in right-center, giving the Utes the first run of the game.

Washington tied the game in the third after
Hailey Hilburn had retired six of the first seven batters of the game. Amirah Milloy walked with one out and stole second. After a ground ball advanced her to third, a wild pitch tied the game.

The Utes went back in front during the bottom half.
Julia Noskin singled and with the corner infielders playing in,
Ally Dickman laced a ball to third. After initially bobbling the ball, UW's third baseman threw wide on a force attempt at second, putting runners on the corners.
Ellessa Bonstrom came through with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

UW answered in a big way during the fourth. Taryn Atlee doubled and scored on the mishandling of a sacrifice bunt to tie the game. A walk and wild pitch put two in scoring position and Milloy added another single for a 3-2 lead. A slow roller to short from Sis Bates scored one more and a controversial fielder's choice for Morganne Flores plated Milloy. Atlee came back to the plate for a second time and cracked a two-run single to push the gap to five runs.

Bates bagged another RBI in the fifth with a triple and scored on a fly ball to center off the bat of Hee. A diving attempt by Barrera froze the runners with the bases loaded as the Washington players thought she had made the catch. Utah was able to get an out on the play but UW increased the lead to 9-2.

Flores capped the evening with a two-run homer, her 17
th of the season, pushing Washington into double figures for a third-straight game.

The Utes and Huskies conclude their series tomorrow at noon. There will be a pair of Easter Egg hunts tomorrow after the contest, one for children ages five and younger and another for ones six and older.
