TUCSON, Ariz. – Despite a weather delay that lasted nearly four hours, the Utah track & field team managed to pick up two more points and send a runner into the finals at the Pac-12 Outdoor Championships late Saturday evening and early Sunday morning at Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
Â
Due to a lightning and weather delay that lasted just a little over three hours and 45 minutes, many scheduled events were postponed to Sunday. Only eight of a scheduled 20 running events on Saturday managed to get finished before the lightning delay began. The delay started with one heat remaining in the men's 100-meters, and following the delay, the schedule was reduced to finishing the men's 100-meters, along with completing the women's 100-meters, M/W 3,000-meter steeplechase and M/W 10,000-meter events.
Â
The M/W 800-meters, M/W 400-meter hurdles and M/W 200-meter events will now be moved to Sunday and will be run as timed finals. These events will begin 30 minutes earlier than Sunday's original scheduled start time of 6 p.m. PT.
Â
"What a first day," said Utah head coach
Kyle Kepler. "It was wacky because of the weather, but I give our kids a ton of credit. Overall, we started how we left this place just a week ago, ending the multi's with a school record in the heptathlon and then setting a new school record to open this meet in the 4x100-meter relay."
Â
Utah opened the day with the 4x100-meter relay team setting a new school record, registering a 45.95 in the first heat of the event. The team consisting of
Raynee Helm-Wheelock,
Jackie Martin,
Maya LeBar and
Taylor Watson, finished eighth overall and qualified for the finals on Sunday.
Â
"A great effort by the 4x100 group," Kepler noted. "Advancing to the finals was everything we wanted and now we are kind of playing with house money and we will see if we can go pick up some points and maybe even inch closer to what could be a regional qualifying mark."
Â
In the 1500-meters,
Sarah Feeny took second-place in her heat and third overall on the way to moving onto tomorrow's finals with a time of 4:20.28.
Cara Woolnough finished sixth in the first heat with a time of 4:25.86, but just missed the finals by one spot as she would finish 13th overall.
Megan Killian finished 17th in the event, but managed to set both a new season and personal-best with a time of 4:31.24.
Â
"Feeny looked great and kind of glided into the finals the way we hoped," Kepler said following the race. "It will be a battle in the conference finals tomorrow, but I think she will keep her nose in it and give it everything she has tomorrow."
Â
Martin set a new season and personal-best in the 400-meters with a time of 55.30. She would also move up into a tie for the seventh-fast time in school history, but just missed out on moving to the finals, coming in 10th overall in the event.
Â
"Jackie gave a great effort and came up just short qualifying for the final, as did Cara in the 1500," said Kepler. "In both of those races, we had the next kid in. That is hard to take, but again it shows the improvement from where we have been at this meet."
Â
Following the weather delay, the meet got right back into action and the women's 100-meter dash was on tap. Helm-Wheelock posted a time of 12.25 in the first heat, while Watson crossed the finish line with a time of 12.09 in the second heat.
Â
Poppy Tank, who was competing her first-ever 10,000-meters, rounded out the evening for the Utes in 10K, finishing seventh overall with a time of 34.21.21. The time ranks fifth-fastest in school history and the fastest 10K time for a Ute in the Pac-12 Championships.
Â
"Poppy came up big for us putting some points on the board in the 10K, the first 10K she has ever ran," said Kepler. "She ran a negative split against some of the best competitors in the country. Against a lot of runners that will be competing in this event in the regionals here in the next couple of weeks. I thought she ran a remarkable race. I think it was a great, gutsy race overall."
Â
Sunday's field events will start on schedule at 11 a.m. PT with the women's hammer and addition of the women's long jump, followed at 1 p.m. by the men's long jump and pole vault, and at 2:30 p.m. by the women's shot put. Running events will resume with the 4x100 relays at 5:30 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled, with the 200- and 800-meters and 400-meter hurdles being moved to timed section finals after the events were postponed on Saturday.
Â
"It will be a different animal for us tomorrow with the meet being pushed up 30 minutes and just running timed finals," said Kepler. "It's going to be crazy as the faster heats will run last and we will just kind of see what it is as it will be a one-shot deal, but we look forward to the challenge. We are here and we are ready to compete. The kids will put themselves out there and let the points fall where they may."
